Just ordered a new Asus router to replace my old D-Link. It's been rock solid for years but is now showing it's age with slow (but reliable) performance.

Just wanting to know if it's advisable to flash the firmware of the Asus when I get it to the latest version 1018g?

Any tips or pointers for setting up this modem?

Ok, so first thing I did was to put the latest 1.0.1.8g firmware on the router and it kind of worked but wireless devices failed to connect properly. Wired devices then kept dropping off intermittantly.

I tried 1.0.1.8i firmware and still the same.

Downgraded back to factory 1.0.1.7f and all working a treat albeit on old firmware. Not going to try custom firmware as i'm not into all that messing around.

AVG then complained about the change of router and failed to authenticate. Drop the firewall and everything worked. Had no option but to reload AVG on 5 pc's which took 2hrs.

The custom firmware is flawless. It has nice features such as guest network, etc. Time to ditch AVG.

There's no messing around to be done, you've already done exactly what is required when you have upgraded and then downgraded the official firmware.

Just head on over to the upgrade tab and point it to the custom firmware, watch it flash and hey presto! you router just became stable and a lot more useful.

Asus router was stable for 2 days and then I started to notice the wifi connection dropping as low a 5Mb/s from 80Mb/s.

I didn't want to try custom firmware as I think the Asus one should work out of the box.

RMA raised with etailer (not OCuK) and Asus router was picked up by their courier and tested by them and found to be faulty. Refund obtained with no hassle.

D-link plugged back in and rock solid connection at 130Mb/s.

I'd def buy another D-link router in future but as far as i'm concerned, i'd steer clear of Asus and stick to someone who only sells networking gear.

So because you had a faulty item you're going to avoid all ASUS routers (even though there at lots of happy users on this forum)? The mind boggles.
