Long Haul flights with babies.......

This is exactly what we are on about..

Wow, you took a 7 month old baby on a flight to Florida just so you could enjoy your holiday, that's insane that people like you who just cant wait.

Its just selfish really dragging children who are not even 1 year old on these long flights just so YOU can enjoy a holiday.

What?!

So because they're young they can't have a good time anywhere other than home.

8 month old Twins to Auckland they slept most of way or watched tv (airnz) had individual tv with selectable programs a god send)

The airline did forgot there meals one way though!

AFAIK, a baby will have just as good a time in Florida as it will in the UK providing the toys etc are the same.

I'm not Sayin it's selfish to take a young child on a plane, but I do think it's quite stupid to put a child through distress so you can go on your own holiday.

What is selfish are the useless parents who jut take their kid on the plane and hope for the best. I don't care if a kid cries on a plane non stop for 9 hours, as log as the parents are doing all they an to fix the situation instead of jut ignoring it. Kids will cry, they have the same right to the aircraft as you.

I keep reading that title as "Long Haul flights with babes......." and that would be my prefered option.

Seriously, Do yourself a favour and stop posting, You sound stupid! How dare they take a child on holiday? Just so they could enjoy themselves? What?!?

I cant even fathom where you're coming from? Are you trying to point out the child wont remember the holiday or something? Because thats not really what matters, if you're having fun, theres a good chance your baby will respond to that. I'm guessing you dont have kids, or generally have much contact with young children\babies. Because I know for a fact children respond very well to a happy loving and stress free environment, and holidays provide that. Also photographs are always nice to look back at. "Oh look, theres you as a baby in Florida"

And yes, fair enough you can have fun in england, But so what....You can also have fun in florida... o.O

On the radio this morning they were talking about a survey that found that children (not babies) were the most annoying thing on flights, and that people would pay more for a no children flight. I found this both depressing and understandable.

I agree with the ealier poster that the reaction of the parents is critical. Sometimes babies cry, but thats just life. As long as the parents are tying to resolve the situation I don't mind, I actually have a lot of sympathy for them. A friendly, understanding smile goes a long way in this siutation. It destresses the parent a bit, which in turn helps them calm their baby. Getting all "tutty" only goes to further your own annoyance.

What does annoy me are the parents that just ignore their havoc creating child or distressed baby. Though I'm not annoyed at the children, rather the selfish attitude of the parents. Luckily this is very rare. On the one occassion I've seen it the crew stepped in quite quickly. I'm not sure what they said, but the parents certainly got the message.

Many of the posters on this thread seems to think that the world revolves around them. One of the greatest skills you'll need in life is accepting that sometimes things that people are entitled to do will get on your nerves. We live in communities, if you really can't coup with that, then consider a hut in the mountains. Thats not to say that a long haul flight with an upset child can be far from fun, it's just one of those annoyances that you have to live with, if your mental state is so fragile that that's impossible, that I'd hazard a guess you only a step away from some serious issues yourself.

Life can be annoying, let it wash over you and focus on the good bits.

When I was a baby, apparently I cried all the way from here to some 5+hr flight. Poor mum and dad, must have been embarrassing.

I would still go, the worst that is going to happen is slight embarrassed as everyone around you glares an sighs if your baby cries.

Has anyone flown long haul with a baby? I am flying from London to Sydney with a 6 month old baby in a months time and could use some reassurance/wise words/general anaesthetic.

Kids up to 4 yrs old should be banned from flying. End Of - All that noise they make & the parents let em carry on. Arghhhhh

Stay at home.

ignore all the geeky 12 year old comments op, im sure your baby will be fine and that your flight wont be full of ocuk members, hopefully like minded people like your self, all you have to do is look after your baby, keep him/her happy and hopefully you dont bump into too many wingers or ocuk teenagers talking ****

If the airline allows you to take a baby on to the fight your are doing absolutely nothing wrong.

There are many things in life that we are "allowed" to do that demonstrate poor etiquette and selfishness.

For the OP though, he has said he is moving to Australia, so there's not really much he can do. The people who take very young kids on long haul flights for a holiday though are definitely inconsiderate and selfish, to the child as well as other passengers. Bad parenting as well to inflict that on the child unless there is a very good reason. There are PLENTY of holiday destinations to choose from with shorter flight times that people can visit for a few years until their kids are a bit older.

I took my first daughter Sydney to NY to meet here Grandpa.
Top tips.
1) Keep the baby awake as long as possible before flying
2) When on board, feed them during the ascent to altitude. As they swallow the eustachian (sp ?) tube will open equalising pressure in the middle ear. Main cause of crying IMHO.
3) Once at cruising altitude, and fed, baby will be calmer but still tired and irritable. Change them and then cuddle them to sleep. being tired they should sleep for the normal max duration. This will maximise the amount of sleep on the plane.
4) Reverse the procedure on the descent to each airport. Equalise their ears !

Also, staff should know you have a small child, so don't be afraid to ask for help. Quiet babies and non-stressed parents is what they want as well.

Good Luck Bud ! Remember to keep calm, babies will pick up on your stress levels. My wife and I found that the best methos was that we took shifts on the 2nd leg of the flight to entertain the baby. That way you each get a chance to rest.

Anyone who takes a baby on a plane on holiday is just bang out of order. Moving to another country it can be accepted as obviously your not going to leave it and move.

Thanks Phage.

This thread got a bit crazy.

I read in the papers that they are looking into this ban or at least having kids in the front or the back of planes only, bring it on.
