Is there enough of a performance difference between these cpus when talking about folding or cpu tasks, to warrent the £200 price difference?

You won't be disappointed by the i7 3930k I can tell you :). Well worth the money especially if you use a lot of multithreaded applications.

Thanks for heads up. I have planned to go for the i7 3930 though just wanted to make sure I wasn't spending nearly £200 more for the smallest of increases in performance.

love those anandtech benchies... not much difference as we all know

no point for 2500k+ owners to even upgrade

not yet anyhow

As everyone else says 3930k does out do a 2X00k i7 in multi threaded tasks. Moar cache, cores and the extra pcie slots make it worth the ectra 200 quid if you fold a lot etc. (I don't understand why you said vs 2700k instead of the newer IB chips instead)

I should say not :D

I would be cool with an overclocked core 2 duo in all honesty, but the upgrade itch always gets you before that much time passes.

upgrade itch can be ignored in this recession :)

just take a look at your wallet and see how thin it is

Pci-e 3.0 probably only real benefit of upgrading
Really? 16 GB/sec not fast enough?

Nothing you can buy now will run significantly faster with PCI-E 3.0. In a year or three it will, but you'll want to upgrade again by then won't you?

I have asked about the SB chips as I have heard that the IB chips get a lot hotter then SB chips so will hamper OC'ing possibilities.

Also for folding would I be better off saving money by getting a 2700 or IB and putting that cash towards another GPU?

Well the don't get "a lot" hotter. They just get hot... the new SB batches are meant to use poor silicon which apparently greatly effects the OC'ing ability of the chips (marketing genius' Intel is release something everyone sees as bad... make something that was good worse and still make money either way) X79 has PCI 3.0 IB has PCI 3.0 you won't get a huge difference from it though. In about a year or so with the way GPU's currently scale it might work out worth while. Also with X79 you'll gain the extra threads which would make folding etc better. You won't notice a massive increase though... but it would be an increase none the less.

Haveing priced up both rigs I will be going with the 3930k as it works out about 200 cheaper a then a sb or ib with three cards which I could always add to at a later date and is the best I can afford for that price

Are you mad? The 3930 is 50% faster than the 2600K in x264. When time = money this is huge. Power efficient too.

Or do you mean, not much real world difference? They'll both run firefox and are probably similar in game FPS, obvs. Most people don't use modern CPUs near their potential. With folding this isn't the case, it'll be maxed out 24/7.
