Things to do in Dublin

Yup my Grandfather was 14yrs old when he signed up for the 36th Ulster Division and was seen to be a good horse man during his training at Donard Camp in Newcastle. That is when General Crozier made him his "Batman".

Many years later on his return (one of the very few) from the Somme he wrote a book that's yet to be published, I have it here, must dig it out.

It was a horrid war. So many men lost their lives due to the ineptitude and snobby elitism of British leadership and tacticians of the time. The 36th made some of the biggest advances during the Somme because they defied British orders of a creeping advance. And then ended up being bombarded by British artillery which caused the majority of their casualties because of their defiance. If more units had performed as well as the 16th and 36th the war might have been over sooner. But because of the creeping advance orders, entire units in the British army were wiped out and ground was never taken quickly. Truly sad.

Play spot the Irishman as there's none left tbh, feel ill at how much a beer costs, leave and vow never to go back. About sums up my last visit.

Generally how much is a pint?

Also where would be the best place/area to stay if going for a couple of nights out?

sorry to hijack the thread!

Dublin is very muticultural now, you can stand in O'Connell street and play spot the Irishman and not see many at all, =/

Its pretty freaky really, not something we're used to. In Belfast its even worse, years ago if you seen a black man he was a doctor, if you seen a chinese man he ran a takeaway and thats literally how it was. Not the case these days, see plenty of ethnicities running around, just sounds funny when their kids speak with a belfast accent saying "what about ye", after only seeing it from native belfast people over the years you sorta don't expect to hear it that way.

:D

There's a guy who works opposite Belfast City hall who sells bus tours up to the giants causeway who spoke almost no english on my first day of uni there 5 years ago.

When I left Belfast last year he had a better Belfast accent than I could do! Terrified me to think in 4 years of learning english "what about ye" is an acceptable greeting to get people on the bus...

Depends how lucky you are, seen €4 occasionally but have been stung for more like €6 in the wrong places.

Best thing to do in Dublin is pretty much... leave. So bloody expensive to have a good time, and if you dare head out to the surrounding towns you just end up in a "The Slaughtered Lamb" kind of situation with the less cultured.

Belfast's where it's at.

I spent 10hours sleeping and the rest of the time drunk. Pubs were great, minus the prices! Had a fab weekend.
