Just joined as this forum was recommended by a friend of mine who just completed his build. Hopefully you guys can teach me a lot and help me with my build!

I just recently started gaming on my computer (a midrange laptop), and now have decided to take the plunge and build a gaming PC for the proper experience.

I am completely new to building a computer, but know the basics and can't wait to get started. That being said, i have to save up first, so i probably won't be building it until about October-ish. But until then i plan to learn as much as i can and know exactly what i need to buy.

I want to be able to play GTA IV, Batman Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Skyrim on full settings at 1080p, ideally at 60fps but 40fps minimum . What kind of hardware i will need?

From what i have read, the Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Processor comes up a lot. Is that overkill for the games i want to play? or is it necessary?

Secondly which graphics card would i need for these games at full settings? Once again what i have read indicates that the GeForce GTX 670 2048MB Graphics Card is good. But it is expensive, would any cheaper cards do the job? - my friend's build uses a Sapphire 7850 graphics card and says it runs skyrim at over 60fps, but he doesn't have batman or gta iv.

My budget is flexible, definitely no more than £1000 for the full build, but hopefully much less. I want the minimum spec that would run the games mentioned above comfortably.

Also, what is the cheapest (legal) way to get Windows 7 64bit? - i see a lot of people asking for a pc to be specced and they say they already have a mouse, keyboard and OS.... is it normal to have a spare copy lying around? or do they say that because all windows 7 prices are the same anywhere you look?

Here is my spec list so far:
GPU - GeForce GTX 670 2048MB = £299

CPU - i5-3570k 3.4Ghz = £180

Home Premium is enough, no need for Pro/Ult for gaming.

If you're planning to build this in October, how about waiting out until then? New stuff is always coming out so you never know what might fit into your budget then ;).

And a HDTVs are terrible to use for gaming, since they're not designed for PCs and more for media. The TV settings could conflict with the PC settings, so it's best to get a proper PC monitor.

My wife has that very same Zalman and although its a very quiet case, once you break the expansion slots out...you cant put them back in ...also make sure you take them out before you place the motherboard in :)...another thing too lol....it lets in loads n loads of dust and crap :(

Firstly, thanks for all your quick replies!!

Two immediate things stand out.

• SSD, this Samsung is cheaper - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-146-SA&groupid=701&catid=2104&subcat=1427
Thanks for mentioning it!
• PSU, never skimp on quality - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-007-XF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= -thats fine for a single GFX card, if you wanted to go SLI later on? then 750W+ is needed.
I am almost certain that i will only ever stick with one graphics card. How do i calculate how much power is needed for my build to help me choose the right PSU?

cheers.

yeah, i will definitely buy the parts then, but i don't have a set budget - e.g. ''i want to spend £1000'', instead i want a PC that will handle the games on full settings for the lowest price, so if i can find what components i need and then buy them as late as possible to take advantage of the price drop.

i am after a big screen (about 42 inch). would i really notice the difference with a monitor/tv? i am reluctant to buy a monitor as well as the tv (the tv is for films too, so i would like it to be huge)

thanks for the tip!

I love the Z9, it's a great case for the price. There is now the Z9 U3 which has 2 USB3 ports at the front. OCuk don't stock it yet but that would be my suggested case.

I own a Z9 I'm still scribbling up a review for a fan controller I've just installed but it makes a BIG difference to owning the case. The Z9 is a lil quirky and needs a few "tweaks" to get the most out of it. The dust filters do catch a lot of the dust however the side has mesh aswell and ideally you want to screen it with a filter or a sheer pair of tights.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 Windforce 3X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £323.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £184.99
1 x XFX 750W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £96.98
1 x ASRock Z77 Extreme4 M Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £96.98

Total : £950.16 (includes shipping : £13.75).

Some alternate suggestions there for you to consider......take a good look at the GPU imparticular. Your build is a way off, so prices will change but you can get an idea of what you want and how to style it now.

If the nvidia 660 comes out that might be worth consideration, we'll just have to balance things as best we can when you have the spondoolies :)

Yes, but even if there may be price drops, it may not be the best for the price anymore. The PC market is that crazy :o. Hence why it's usually best to wait to see if anything better crops up for the same/lower price until it;s buying time.

Well, I suppose you can have a go with the TV first, and see how you feel about it.

I run my HTPC through a 42inch 3DTV and it's actually pretty good. It's not ideal for 3D as the HDMI 1.4a limits me to 720P to get good Hz/FPS. Although even at 720P the image is still good and the 3D effect is pretty cool.

He needs to set his TV at a resolution where he will get atleast 60hz. Most HDTVs are 24hz in 1080P, so you can't get any higher than 24FPS which is pants. TVs usually have a "game mode" to set the screen to a higher refresh rate ;)

i'll let the better skilled advise on the core components, but what i would say is that if this pc is for gaming and the 'proper experience' do not buy a hdtv to go with your build. hdtv's (forget about game modes and the like) are designed for a wide range general use purpose. invest in a proper gaming grade monitor, whose sole job is to display games. you dont have to break the bank to get a good quality monitor.

i have a 2 year old 24" benq monitor, and a 6 month old 40" samsung led tv. the benq still wins for me every time

You'll get more latency from HDMI HDTV, and John Carmack will come around your house to smash your kneecaps.

I've yet to take an arrow in the knee let alone answer to John Carmack ;)

I thought he was using the TV to save cash for parts. I did try to point out the limitations of using a HDTV and HDMI

I couldn't find it in my parent's new TV :(. Oh well only for movies, they can't see the difference :p.

What is the PC connection on the TV other than HDMI? If you're lucky it might have a DVI port. In PC mode 1080P would be atleast 60hz i would bet.

Only HDMI. It can display 1080p @ 60hz but there's overscan issues. Even fiddling with the scaling options in CCC it doesn't look right. Can't find a game mode or pixel mapping in the TV settings. But I'm not too fussed, my parents have the laptop in duplicate mode since it's the easiest for them so it's fine on 768p.

if you're not gonna sli the gpu, the psu is fine as is

Brrr... not fine. Would you really do it? I certainly wouldn't. The CX600, maybe.

Best choice imo is either a 670, or a 7850 / 7870 + SSD. Unless you can get away with not buying a HDD.

You should be ok with a TV.

Your original selection is fine (except PSU), with Stulid's recommendations. M4 / Samsung / Intel SSD over OCZ.

Basically Number_25, with a 670. Can change gelid to whatever although it's a decent cooler. For performance whbile being quiet, personal fave is the True Spirit 120, Hyper 212 evo, Gelid. A50 is good too.

it'll be close ;p
and ocuk dont stock the ts120 anymore, guess it basically choked the sales of all other heatsinks lol

You really do need to be spec'ing modular PSUs in small cases Tam. Number 25 used a non modular PSU in the Z9 too. The XFX PSU is good but hiding the excess cables in the Z9 is difficult and cut a long story short they will be blocking airflow :(

I'd agree with Oliviers (we tend to agree on most things to be fair) comments. I own a gelid tranquillo it's not bad and is pretty quiet......it can only mount one fan however. I used the CM 612S in my spec as the fan is quiet, it can mount two fans and it doesnt use those poxy wire clips to hold the fans on making life easier.

The OP seems to be getting a clear idea of what he wants and doesn't. SLI/Xfire is out the window so money could definately be saved on my spec. I look forward to seeing what he settles on in a month or so :D
