Hi,

Can anyone recommend a suitable and decent strategy game for my 8 year old son to play?

I have allowed him to buy Supreme Commander 2 which is a 12+ but anything older than that rating wise I am holding him back for now.

His friends all play Halo and COD etc but I think he is far too young for those games and it is also a matter of principal too.

Anyway, this post isn't about that!

We are struggling to find strategy games similar to SC2 or Halo etc..

Any recommendations?

Much appreciated :)

Command & Conquer 3 is quite fun, why isn't he allowed to play Call of Duty and Halo? Strategy games can have as much violence in them as those games, if that's what it's about.

Civilization Revolution.

A decent enough version simplified for console players, and it will be able to teach some anachronistic world history as well! :p

Surely your son must know that tanks existed in 4000BC! And a primitive caveman with wooden spears is more powerful than any modern military unit! :D

Halo Wars is definitely an option.

Alternatively, if you want to go for the extremely kiddish.

There's Viva Pinata. :D Kiddish as it may seem, my ex loved it. (Just to clarify....She was in her 20s =\:p)

I'll add a +1 to both to Civ Revolution and to Halo wars. Both good games in their own right.

My current girlfriend loves Viva Pinata :p. She's 23...

I also loved Viva Pinata to be fair, also 23 :p.

Well congratulations on your appropriate parenting skills, sick and tired of playing games like COD against 10year olds whining down their microphones or being otherwise annoying. There is a reson why games have age ratings and its refreshing to know that there are still responsible adults who stick to them. I love all civilisation games so will echo the above, command and conquerer (especially the older titles) arent gory/require a mature audience.

Thanks chaps. Much appreciated.

Is Halo Wars suitable then as its coming up as a 16+ ?

Ha ha.

I think that game looks cool but my son reckons its just for 'babies' lol. We are at that stage!

I get very confused when people say Viva Pinata is a kid's game. It's actually pretty damn complicated to advance in it, I'd be surprised if kids could do more than just play aimlessly in it.

Age ratings aren't there so you don't have kids screeching down their microphones at you, besides I found it's usually the 18-30 age range that are the most annoying considering they seem to rage every time someone kills them in a way that they find 'unfair'.

Not a strategy game but get him minecraft.

My 9 year old has become hooked on it. He's got hundreds of hours of playtime out of it. Money well spent.

That wasn't really my point just an added bonus. Hmm I'd say 12-20 age range are the most annoying.

I agree with this. Also, Halo Wars is great, my 9yr old son loves it.

Others tried, Supreme Commander 2, LOTR Battle for Middle Earth II, Universe at War and Tom Clancy's End War.

What about Toy Soldiers?
