So I'm going to be in Aberdeen and Inverness area from tomorrow with a car and 48 hours to get around, what do the good people of OcUK recommend as the best things to see in the area? As well as any locally known tips and tricks of good places to go, thinking along the lines of fun things to see/eat, good lookouts, amazing cove/beach etc.

So far it's:
  • Loch Ness
  • Urquhart Castle

Loads of castles around... Dunottar and Crathes are quite nice ...

I would drive the mountain route from Aberdeen to Inverness (via Tomintoul). Very scenic and great roads! :D

You can check out the Castle trail and the Whisky trail. Less of the latter if you're driving :D

Plenty to keep you going for a couple of days.

We are planning our return trip to Aberdeen via that scenic route, good to here it more than just looks good on Google Maps!

Go to Aviemore and drive up to the Cairn Gorm mountain facility - you can get a train from there to further up Cairn Gorm. Really nice.

I went there a few months ago. Loch Ness is nice but fairly underwhelming.

This is the view from the top of the railway:

As Fox says the Cairngorm funicular will provide you with an elevated view of some truly awesome scenery - make sure you take your camera ;)

The A93 Braemar onto the A939 Leicht / Tomintoul road is one of the best you'll see in this country imo :D

Where are you staying at night time?

If you are in Inverness one night then go to Hootenanny's pub. It has amazing beer on tap and live scottish music almost all the time. Brilliant place!

The Black Isle just north of Inverness is quite nice too. Not much to see in Aberdeen really.

Fort George if you are into historical sites. The Highland Wildlife Park is good but it's a bit more out of the way though doable if you are planning to go a more scenic route back to Aberdeen.

For places to eat in Inverness: Cafe 1, Rocpool, The Mustard Seed and Hootananny's is good for the music/drink too.
