Hi all,

I am currently trying to decide on a new monitor, to replace a rather old Samsung 2032 :(

I seem to spend more time playing games and web browsing than I do photo's or movies on the PC, movies are usualy via a second display either plasma or projector, 1080p. Games include WoT, WoP, ToR, BF3, Minecraft, all C&C titles including old with funny resolutions, with MWO and PS2 and whatever other future games may come along.
I will also be getting a new graphics card soon, well building a new PC hopefully sooner rather than later, with either the AMD 7970 Ghz or Nvidia GTX 680.

To that end I cannot decide which monitor to go for, but I am thinking of either of the following, BenQ XL2420T or Dell U2412M?

Any opinions on which may better suit?

Thankyou.

It makes the most significant difference if your framerate is well above 60 frames per second. However, the monitor will still 'feel' more responsive compared to a 60Hz monitor even at frame rates of 60fps or slightly lower. 120Hz monitors such as the XL2420T are not only able refresh to frames of the game twice as quickly but are also able to poll responses from input devices such as the mouse twice as often. The effect of this is most significant at higher frame rates but even at 60fps you will see/feel a significant advantage here over even the most responsive 60Hz LCD monitors. People often confuse this with 'input lag' as they both affect how responsive a monitor feels to the user and are both important - but you will find that a 60Hz monitor with extremely low input lag simply doesn't have this seem connected feeling.

couple of thing to note:

- 2412 IPS panel has superior colors compared to TN panels
- the benq is 1920x1080 (16:9) while the dell is 1920x1200 (16:10)

i had a couple of 120Hz monitors, but i still chose to go back to 60Hz with superior color reproduction.

The same is said when you go 1920x1200, you will never go back to 1080p. Compare the two and you lose so much screen space. 120Hz has put me off as they wont make 16:10

Not really, i was on 1920x1200 went to 1920x1080, actually prefer the 2nd but mainly due to 120hz being so much better than 60hz well at least for my gaming....the space loss isn't that huge nor an issue for me but i can see it being good for some graphic work/photography.

From your main usage... get the BenQ - no question about it.

I would recommend the Dell if you main use was desktop work... as your main use is gaming, the BenQ is the better buy.

Many thanks for the opinions and replies all :)

I will go for the BenQ, if I ever feel the need in future for a more desktop orientated IPS I am sure there will be many about, maybe even 120hz variants.

I spend the majority of my time on the PC's playing games, so it makes sense to try out 120hz. I am sure it will be a lot better than my current monitor!

Get the GTX670 over a 680 in the near future aswell or maybe even GTX660 incase you want to try 3D vision on it which is pretty nice as i think the 680 is too pricey.

Really?

I've seen SC2 comparisons and certainly for games you see more of it on 16:9, miss probably an 1/8th on 16:10

I'm confused how this happens on a pc game supporting 1920x1200 as the res has the same width just 1200 lines in height over 1080. Surely you would see more ?

If you play in 1080p on the 2412 you get small black bars at the top and bottom and the screen is essentially the same size as it would be on a 24" 1080p monitor so surely nothing is lost over a 1080p screen as it is running as a 1080p screen.

I can see the issue with consoles that are designed to run in 16x9 and it zooming to fill the 16x10 res but surely with a pc this would not be an issue if the game supports a 16x10 res and if not at 1080p the screen just displays small bars top and bottom to make the screen 1080p ?
