Coil Whine Query

i get coil whine while on the 2d loading screen for heaven, and also on the main welcome screen for minecraft i also got it on high fps situations with mine craft (200+fps) so i downloaded a HD texture pack (128x) and now my fps barely goes above 100 and i dont get coil whine in game. but when it does whine it is really loud! also whines when running a virus scan :S

sapphire 7850 btw

It might be caused by your PSU if you get it during a virus scan, I don't imagine that it is GPU accelerated. :p

You might have a noisy GPU and PSU though.

lol possibly, but i never had coil whine before i got the gpu so even if the psu is causing the whine its coming from the graphics card.

No not necessarily the new gpu could be drawing more power so it still can be your PSU.
Regards

just varnish the component where the noise is, the problem is if you need to RMA it in the future, mind you; if you're careful the varnish might not show

I had a 580 with coil whine, it was so annoying. All the advice I got was it will be the psu..

I tried everything, different psu cables, different pci slot etc etc, got fed up sold it and bought a 6970 and it's completely silent.

No doubt is the card.

Tell you guys something for nothing here.

If it is coil whine and not the fan (heard it lots on ATI Cards) You have had 2 excellent posts on the reasons/cause.

I have just been doing some bench testing with some new kit, I can tell you One of the PSU's I was testing caused coil whine from a card that has never exhibited the problem. Not a full blown "screech" but an annoying Buzz !

Try the Ferrite chokes (even if you chop them out off an old monitor cable or find a bit of ferrite rod and make couple of turns around it)
and another PSU if you can. It's not a voltage issue it's the frequency of the Ripple (noise) on the 12v rail.

Also this "Cook the card overnight" may well have the effect of getting the card
so hot the "Potting" that the inductors (coils) are in, melts and reflows, there is no other plausible explanation.

You now have enough information to choose which direction you go ;)
Also I would say, I doubt very much the noise would get worse in the next couple of years if left, more likely the opposite due to accumulated dust and debris.

it can be really annoying, my last card had a whine that annoyed the hell out of me, but my dad could never hear it when he visited,i fixed my 9800GTX by putting glue gun over the inductors to stop them moving(since coil whine is essentially vibration), though ive been told plumbers mait works just as well and can be taken off to be RMA'd at a later date , but if its still in warranty id say go the RMA route.

Oh well, definitely going back.

First chance I've had to have a decent gaming session since I got it and this **** happens after a couple of hours:

It didn't happen in Skyrim or Alan Wake when testing the other night, but after some BF3, thought I'd have a go of Alan Wake to chill out a bit before I hit the sack and bam a mess everywhere.

Changed from 12.7 beta(in case it was a bug)to 12.6 but still the same, tried some more titles but mostly the same.

Will drop OcUK a line and dsr it, just get a refund, not impressed at all.:(

I don't think that's a coil whine problem !
But I suppose you won't have to fix the problem now !

Hope you get it sorted

What about putting a FERRITE CORE around the PCI-e cable, would that cure some of the whine?

I'd had enough of coil whine on the 7970 series :(

I've had two VTX 7970's and now a windforce.

The first VTX was by far the loudest, it also did it at any fps. Second only did it at high fps. The windforce does it at all fps, as well as watching TV on my TV card.

I've also returned an ocuk 670, because the fan was pants (electronic whirring noise at any rpm)

Not sure where to turn, may have to go back to a non reference 670.

You'd expect a £300-£350 graphics card to be of decent quality :(
