Apologies if this is a fairly elementary idea for a thread; I'm not the most travelled of people!

My girlfriend and I want to go away somewhere for 2-3 nights towards the end of August, but are as of yet undecided on where.

Current possibilities are Bath, Edinburgh, Torquay, somewhere in Cornwall. Could do with a bit of insight and pros/cons of various places if people have any to share. I'm sure there's so much to the UK to see!

A mixture of sights to see and nice relaxing surroundings would be great. We went to the Isle of Wight a few months ago and loved it there.

P.s. We were also contemplating somewhere like Barcelona as a more extravagant choice, but I fear it may be a bit ambitious with only two weeks' organising!

Bowness on Windermere is nice ,expensive accommodation and lots of tourists but still nice

There's tons of other nice places round the lake district too.

Barcelona is easily doable in such a short time

My advice would be a city break in Europe i.e. Paris, Venice etc. Only look at staying somewhere in the UK if you don't mind rain!

Lake district is a good shout if you don't mind the rain but I prefer Keswick to Bowness as it's less touristy and as more places to eat and drink at night, also Derwent water is much prettier than Windermere and is fairly easy to walk around.

try at loch melfort harbour and pier as it great view and very relax, just 20 miles south from Oban... check online and see what u think...

Advice, get out of the UK

Tiresome advice is tiresome.

There is much thats good to see in the UK - we have some fantastic scenery and some fantastic cities, too.

Edinburgh is a beautiful city - I've been twice now and thoroughly enjoyed it on both occasions. Another nice place to go is Chester - very lovely city, some reasonably priced decent hotels, nice zoo, and it's also close enough for a day trip in somewhere like Liverpool, which is great for shopping etc if your girlfriend is into that.

Come to Hull!

Plenty to do, first off, when you arrive at the train station you are greeted with a plethora of filthy disco pubs were you can drink yourself stupid with the resident urine stained alco-grannies and the pill'd up chav hooligans who will smash their alcopop bottles over you head if you so much as breathe near them. If you feel more like doing some sight seeing then take a left from the station and you will aproach the local dole office where you can witness the fine jobless council estate population receiving their well earned free money. If this is not to your taste then right opposite the station is a gay/lesbo pub that pumps out techno music all day every day and is populated with confused teenagers who cant decide if they are gay or not.

Edinburgh seems to be the default answer at the moment. The fringe festival is on until the 26th or so, and you'll find something going on. However, hotels are stupidly expensive.

Considered York, but it looks a bit 'ye olde' for our tastes. I could be wrong though?!

Edinburgh was our preference until I found out that there are approximately zero hotel rooms available anywhere nice due to the festival.

We're now strongly considering Bath, but will look into Chester :)

Depends on what you like, see, i love a break in London for the hustle and bustle, or a break camping in the lakes to get away from it all, i like to go back home to Manchester at least once a year, and i love it. I also love Cornwall, however, it's an 8 hour drive for me. Edinburgh is nice, whereas, so is Glasgow, for different reasons. There's a huge choice which depends on what you fancy ultimately!

I said in another thread that it would be possible to stay in Glasgow and get the train through to Edinburgh. It's pretty quick and not very expensive. Glasgow is better for nightlife, museums are free, there's usually quite a lot going on and the hotels won't be so expensive. It's also claimed to be the 2nd best shopping in the UK after London.

Failing that, the first weekend of September should be a lot cheaper in Edinburgh.

I love Belfast, I found it very cheap and great fun. And, you have to go on an aeroplane to get there so feels more like a 'proper' holiday. :)

York does have plenty to do and some nice guest houses. If you do decide on York I recommend staying at the Tower Guest House, very clean, great breakfast and friendly hosts. Also visit the train museum there's loads to see, very interesting and it's free!

There's load of great places in the UK but our weather is lousy and can easily ruin a short stay with torrential rain and floods so think carefully.
