I'm going to Mexico at the end of September for 10 nights.

I've had my jabs and my passport is up to date...anything else I should do for going over there? Do I need a VISA? Whats the deal with money, I've heard I need US dollars and have to pay tax on the way into the country?

Has anyone been who could confirm?

im going in december.

i've been told to take peso's instead of dollars and will also get more for your ££££s as you will get double whammyd in exchange rates otherwise.

check this out. http://www.cancuncare.com/Money_in_Cancun/dollars_pesos.htm

its a 780 peso exit tax on leaving. bout £40

ive just googled about a visa and its not required. you will need a tourist card however but if you are flying in, this is covered in the air fare and you will receive it on arrival.

Cool so no visa just the tourist card that is issued on the plane. Sounds similar to the paperwork I filled in before going through passport control in Tunisia.

Hear so many different stories about currency, I personally was just going to take pesos but hear people take us dollars to pay tips and the exit taxes?! Seems strange. And being honeymoon I don't want anything to go wrong

I was there last June. The official currency is peso although they accept dollars (presumably just to make life convenient for Americans).
I found the price for everything to be in Pesos and I think that the conversion rates worked out very similar if not favouring pesos.
As mentioned - the exit tax was about £35-£40

Maxico is brilliant, you'll have a great time!

Currency wise I always find Peso is the way to go, you wont have any issues whatsoever whereas with Dollars i find things are a little bit more expensive... :|

Where abouts are you going ?

Its handy to have some dollars with you for tips as they are worth more than pesos to the people you will be tipping. Most things are paid for in Pesos though.

I also paid my exit tax in Dollars.

So basically have mostly Pesos but take a few Dollars with you, will definately come in handy.

I find that most places are definitely cheaper when using the local currency. You'll find that they round up prices or use a poor exchange rate for USD.

I'd take peso's with some USD handy just in case. A different currency, but this is exactly what I've done both times in Antigua and it worked a charm.

Whereabouts you going? I love Mexico, did a road trip from Mexico City to Acapulco once with lots of stops and more recently a cruise around the Yucatan Peninsula (and Honduras and Belize)

We're going to be stopping in Playacar

Original hotel we booked is going to be closed for a few months so they've upgraded us to the Riu hotel next door :)

Everyone I've spoken to has said how nice Mexico is so I really can't wait to get the wedding out of the way now so we can go and experience it

The jabs were all recommendations, but would rather play it safe when it comes down to health.
