This isn't a medical thread just seeking info if anyone has the same issue.

I've been having these weird electric/shock sensations occur right when I'm about to fall asleep.

It's hard to describe, but it's like my brain all of a sudden sends an electric current throughout my body waking me up? Could be my brain or my chest, I'm not even sure.

I don't see any flashes or hear anything; it's just the sensation I feel. I'm not short of breath and my heart only races because it scares me.

Some nights it will only happen once or twice and I can get to sleep pretty easy, It's weird because when I try to go to sleep for the first time, I'm super tired, but after these shocks happen it's like I'm wide awake after the bad ones. It's just frustrating because I haven't had a great nights sleep since this has started.

But anyway, sorry for rambling. Just was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this and any advice for maybe getting rid of them?

I've heard many different stories that your body is in a in between state unconsciousness so it sends a impulse to get you back to normal?

Sort of a sudden jolt when some of your muscles convulse? That's quite common, I heard it caused when the position you're lying in is placing pressure in the wrong places so your body jerks to relieve the pressure - but I have no idea if that is true.

Sounds like a case of bad AIDS to me. I'd get yourself down the docs immediately.

I've had this every night since I moved house. I'll be going to sleep and just as I'm asleep I spasm and wake up with a start. It's a pita and I haven't had it on a long run like this before so if it keeps up you should do what I'm going to do and seek medical advice (not on a forum though :p)

Moving house is stressful and hypnic jerks are supposed to occur more when you're stressed or anxious.

Its not causing me any pain or anything it only lasts for no more than a second it seems, Its not worthy of going to the docs about but its just a strange feeling.

Are you taking any kind of antidepressant or recently stopped?

The 'electric shock' sounds like a brain zap

Symptoms described as "brain zaps", "brain shocks", "brain shivers", "head shocks", or "cranial zings" are withdrawal symptoms experienced during discontinuation (or reduction of dose) of antidepressant drugs.[3][4] The symptoms are widely variable in description and are of unknown etiology;[4] common descriptions include dizziness, electric shock-like sensations, sweating, nausea, insomnia, tremor, confusion, nightmares, and vertigo.[3][4] The MedDRA "preferred term" for coding these types of symptoms in adverse drug reaction reports (for use in pharmacovigilance databases such as under the Yellow Card Scheme) is paraesthesia.[5][6]
