Max out games @ 1080p

Who knows? Depends where games go. If you pick up a second 670 at a later date for relatively cheaply then you'll be fine for a long time.

I don't see the 7950/70 or 670/80's struggling myself but it's not like there's a massive bumper for games to utilise. BF3 for example runs fine at the moment but anything more than that and you're likely to see more dips below 60 FPS. The good news is that TXAA which is kind of like MSAA is coming and eats less performance than the latter.

you should be able to max out all current games with that setup
how future proof it is is anyone's guess but 1 year I would say pretty certain, approaching 2 years and you'll be looking to SLI or updgrade if you still want max settings

as Rusty says - MSAA is the big killer to FPS at the moment and TXAA should keep these cards fresh once it starts getting liberally applied to future games

I got a Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe which only supports 1 gpu but now I don't know what cpu/gpu I should get if games wont play smoothly on them. The games I would like to play are Battlefield 3, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and ARMA 3.

With that CPU you pretty much won't bottleneck a single card for a very long time. So you could always sell on the 670 at an opportune time and then buy the next generation so the cost of upgrading is small.

That's the most cost effective way of upgrading in my eyes.

don't forget, since everything these days is multi-platform, you're going to be fine at least until the xbox720/ ps4 are released. which won't be for a couple years yet.

I thought the xbox720/ps4 are using older hardware comparing to what we use today so how does that make games more demanding for us pc gamers?

Should I be able to max out all games @ 1080p with a 3570K and a GTX 670?

is it future proof for 1-2 years?

1-2 years? Probably not no, how good is one GTX670 in Metro 2033 maxed out @ 1080p with 4xAA? http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-670-review/17

38fps, not a new game either.

Buying a card and expecting it to be able to max out games for 2 years is a tall order tbh. But it does depend on how many games you play and what the games are for example, maybe you want to play the next Crysis game?

Just purchased a 670 last week - great card but how naive was I expecting to get 60fps on Metro maxed out !!

Drop 'Advanced D.O.F' and settings to 'high' - then I get a constant 60fps.

The PC port always needs higher-spec hardware than the console version.

You can really optimise code for consoles in a way you can't for PCs. Thus PCs need more grunt to run the same game.

The point of my post, however, is that going forwards, the PC as a platform is heavily tied to the consoles. So you won't really benefit from top of the range hardware if you're limited to 1080p.

People using 670s are using high-res screens or multi-display setups.

If it's predecessors are anything to go by, then I think it's going to be a tall order tbh, it's a very demanding game-if you want all the candy.

It may be wiser to hang tight as the 660 is inbound if it's an Nvidia card your after.

Realistically, you don't get that much extra noticeable performance(without an fps counter on show) over say an overclocked 7850, you are paying quite a premium for the pleasure.

However, the premium does get you a truly outstanding card in the guise of the 670 though.

This is coming from a 6950>70 CrossFire user that's recently tried a 7970, to only DSR it(for various reasons, I'm not wanting a replacement either), to then put only one 6950>70 back in(added my 9800GT for Physx to play BAC) and to tell you the truth, it's not much different(with a few settings dropped of course) in performance or visual quality@1080p.

It may be wiser to purchase cheaper gpu's and upgrade more often for 1080p, that way you can be sure of achieving maximum performance available over the coming years.

The next consoles are using AMD CPU's and GPU's. The hardware they are using is similar to hardware in a gaming pc so future consoles will be easier and hopefully better performing when ported compared to current consoles. Current consoles are extremely heavy on the CPU IIRC and barely use GPU.

Console gpu's have an advantage over discrete gpu's as they can carry out a bucketload more instrutions than the DX disadvantaged discrete gpu, DX is holding back the pure brute force(in regards to gaming) available to PC gpu's, no surprise considering who's behind DX.

Before anyone asks for source, google it(carmack, DX limitations/code/ consoles), every time it comes up, I always have too!:p

:)

I hope so...I am fed up with poorly ported console games. Maybe it is lazyness or maybe the programmers are under pressure to just bung out a PC release at the same time as the consoles.

Either way, I look forward to the next gen of consoles and hopefully a better crop of games.

I have a 3570K and a GTX 670 (GB Windforce), and I run the demanding game BF3 at 60fps (do not check for higher as 60mhz monitor) with Ultra settings. Damn fine.

it will take sometime.

rumour has it Valve is building a console based on linux.

You know some games run faster in wine under linux than on win.

apparently they've already done L4D2 and it showed about a 20% increase in FPS on Linux, and a similar but slightly less amount on windows by switching from DX to OpenGL, they've brought steam to linux and are gradually porting games to it
