hi guys, my laptop is a compaq CQ70-211 , it has a pentium T3400 as standard (2.16ghz), 2 x 1gb of PC2-5300.

i upgraded the ram to 2 x 2gb PC2-6400 and the laptop was fine.

i bought a Core2Duo P8600 2.4ghz, second hand off of ebay. It arrived and had a bent pin, i straightened it gently with my finger, it never worked, when i powered up nothing at all came on the screen. I assumed this to be a doa cpu.

i bought another Core2Duo P8600 2.4ghz, second hand off of ebay. I asked the seller to test it before i bought it and he confirmed it tested fine. I fitted this and the same again, i press the power button and my laptop is just a black screen.

I have refitted the original cpu and all is well. So why cant i upgrade my cpu, below is a list of the cpu's it lists for the CQ70, any reason why it wont work guys? i have the latest bios.

Have you tried yanking the BIOS battery out (with the main battery removed too) and hold the power button down for 30 seconds or so? It's possible that you got 2 dud CPUs, but unlikely

Also, tried the old RAM with the new CPU?

the bios battery and main battery were removed as part of the strip down, i never held the power button down though, what does this do?

the second cpu was meant to be tested too but yeah its unlikely both were faulty.

i have not tried the old ram with the new cpu's. how likely is this to be the problem, its a lot of work to change the cpu and i have the original back in so its not an easy thing to try, i should have tried it when i had the new cpu in.

What stepping were the P8600s?

There is M0 and R0 and perhaps the R0 isn't supported by the BIOS?

When it powers on but nothing comes up on the screen it usually means the CPU isn't supported and it could be the stepping or the FSB isn't supported. Perhaps the laptop is locked to 800 FSB by the manufacturer because it was fitted with the T3400?

You could try a wire mod of the socket to force it to boot with the FSB as 800 as a test or just buy a cheap 800 FSB Penryn CPU to test.

It does not give the stepping specs on the intel site.:(

is it common for manufacturers to lock the fsb speed?

i have put the original cpu in and it boots no problem. so no need to test it. Its not practical to keep swapping the cpu's as its a lot of work to completely strip the laptop.

What I mean is the BIOS for your specific model could be configured to only allow 800 FSB CPUs.

Why not ask HP for confirmation of which CPUs can be installed?

yeah probably the best thing to do under the circumstances, ill send an email to hp support.

many thanks for your help ;)

The HP support bot will just read the CPU support list from the website back to you :(

worse, she kept going on about the operating system, i told her a few times it was the processor i changed, she said 'i dont know what that is' :D:D:D

so after explaining i did not want to buy a processor off their sales dept, she said i need to speak to a technician which i need to pay for, so i have to call sales on monday in order to pay to speak to a technician, what a bloomin palava :eek::eek:
