Should I buy a laptop now or wait for Windows 8?

I was wondering if it was the right time to buy a laptop, I wanted to buy an Alienware M17X or Dell XPS laptop but I'm not sure whether I should proceed or not, I could always Put a copy of Windows 8 on it but I'm sure I'll be regretting it in the future. My home built computer is getting stuck on the Windows sign and I hate being stuck in one place, my Lumia just isn't suitable for use browsing and gaming when I'm out.

What do you think?

Most retailers are running the upgrade for £15 offer are they not? I'm giving 8 a miss unless it gives pretty substantial gains in games

I think you'll get more sensible advice in 'Windows & other software'. Hopefully a mod will move it.

GD isn't what you think it is :D

Aren't you something like only six hours old?

Should be some good deals on at the min as they will reducing prices and putting items on clearance for the back to school range that comes in late august / september.

Wouldn't worry too much about Win 8, will be loads of upgrade offers around.

Have a look for some models that came out about 3 months ago and they should be going into clearance prices. For some reason laptop manufactures update the range every quarter, despite the fact that they rarely make more than one substantial hardware change per year.

Windows 8 will probably be a mess anyway. It's looking like an overblown tablet OS so far, so most sensible people will probably stick with Windows 7.

I'm not sure that Windows 8 will be better than 7 for a laptop. It's been designed for phones and tablets and apparently anything other than a touchscreen isn't supported particularly well.

So I'd go with getting a laptop now with 7 and seeing what happens with 8. There'll be upgrade offers for a while after launch.

Then again, I'm still using XP. I've certainly had my money's worth from it. I keep looking at 7 and thinking if what it does that XP doesn't is worth ~£125 to me and finding that the answer is "no".
