More questions: Audi Purchase

But then you still need to pay a huge whack at the end to keep the car?

Are you really sure this is a good idea - your posts give of all the wrong signs, it seems like you are really stretching yourself to get into a second hand Audi, this is never a good idea. If you want to buy a used car like this you should always make sure you've not stretched yourself financially and that you've got a useful fund left over. It might have a 2 litre diesel engine but that doesnt mean you should expect Fiesta running costs.

What I have is money left over at the end of the month, what I dont have is capital at the moment because Im putting all my capital into another house. To save up £16k-£20k is going to take ages so I will be looking at a repayment plan of some sort

I think what I am going to do is save up around £4k and take out a loan/finance for the original £12k I wanted to spend to give me a budget of £16k; perhaps save more

All the while keeping an eye out for other deals coming up or possibly change my criteria

Thats a much better idea - make sure you keep a grand or two tucked away as well (Though you may not need as much as that if you get a warranted example).

The Audi A3

do you think it will have more legroom than a ford focus? be more comfortable, as I said my primary reason for looking for a car at the moment is comfort.. whilst I prefer the A4 Estate because it has a few extra tricks up its sleeve in terms of being able to carry a lot more stuff I might have a think about an A3

Will the ride feel a lot more stable than my ford?
Will I be more comfortable? Lumbar support etc?
Is there anything missing from the A3 that the A4 has other than space/size
What about fuel economy? This is a big issue for me
Cruise control?
Can they get those sexy LED lights?

Yes, it's an absolutely ancient car that first came out 9 years ago and has a tech level to reflect this. No MMI.

Agreed, and it is one of the least ergonomic cars I have ever had the displeasure to drive.

Examples:

Armrest fouls handbrake, when down and gets in the way of gearchanges, up its just plain annoying.

Electric window switches are awkward to reach, and not at all in a natural position, you have to move your arm backwards into the gap between the seat and pillar (or door if short) to use them.

Centre console is just the right height (way too high imho) to dig into your upper calf when you rest your left leg.

12v power socket is in a stupid place if you want to plug in a phone charger, and catches your hand when you use the lower part of the H gate (gears)

Comparing the A3 to the Mk5 golf they are night and day in terms of comfort/ergonomics.

what about vauxhall insignia, would the hatch version of that be more comformatable than the focus? my focus is an 04 btw

I drove an insignia on a business trip once, I really enjoyed it

The estate version is decent looking too

do they have lots of gadgets? I love gadgets.. which I guess is obvious seeing as what forums we are on :P

Why not get a Mondeo? I got mine with everything you are looking for (Sat Nav, USB, Adaptive Cruise etc) for 9k and that was with far less mileage than that A4. Granted mine's a petrol but there's no reason why a Diesel should be much more.

Drove company pool car yesterday, A3 with all those lovely features you mention! Arm rest and handbrake are completely retarded! Started to drive with:
Satnav charger plugged in
Armrest down ready for a long motorway journey

My god, tried to get in to second and buggered it all up!

It was a nice car to drive, but it certainly didn't feel any more special than a Focus or Golf.

Ignore the outside of the Mondeo, find and sit in a fully kitted Titanium X, it'll probably have all the toys you want/need.

who cares about lcd screen lol you're buying a CAR!

What a daft thing to say. If you want a certain feature/spec, then you want it.

Otherwise you might as well say, "who cares that it's got a diesel/petrol/v6/v8/v10/turbo/supercharger, you only need to get from A to B lol".

You either "get" it or you don't.

I've been paying more attention to the cars on the road deciding what I like

Seen quite a few BMW estates, they look better than Mercedes but I still don't like the look of them much... Also Won't they be similar price to Audi?

Glad it wasn't just me, I had a 58 Golf and my Wife's is a 59 A3, the Golf felt well designed and drove well, the A3 had overly sensitive brakes, no feel to the steering (Poverty spec vs GTI so no surprise there) and felt very claustrophobic compared to the Golf's more spacious feel.

The A3 just felt like the interior was sketched out on the back of a cornflake packet and Audi said "That'll do".
