Criminal convictions - how to find out more?

I have a job applicant who has included a declaration under the rehabilitation of offenders act 2009, the offences commited are sexual offences.

His CV is good, and i dont wish to unfairly discount him on the fact he went to prison, however I need to know more about the offence he committed as I take my daughter into work with me at times and pick her up from school and she will be in the office - obviously if he was a child sex offender then he wouldnt be getting employed...

So, is there anyway I can find out more about his offences (I have his name, address, dob etc.) without asking him directly?? (like a background check?)

CRB I think but depends on work and he will need to be made aware and submit form.

EDIT: I think he will have someone to report to as well (advisor of some sort) on a regular 'weekly' basis.

You can't do a CRB check without the written (signed) permission of the person being submitted for the check.

And even when done it may well give little more information that is already given as it seems the person has been quite honest and therefore may be the person to speak to about this. And fair play to you op for not being prejudice and actually considering this bloke. People like you are rare on here.

I shall have to ask him for further info then and get a CRB check done, obviously the safety of my children comes first but otherwise I see no reason to exclude him from being considered the same as all the other applicants.

I'll take back what I said about you earlier ... people like you are VERY rare on here :D

You need to get the prospective employee to complete an "Enhance CRB Check" - the CRB helpline can help: 0870 9090 811

It costs something like £40 and he will get a certificate printed from the PNC that details all convictions and cautions. I don't think it contains information on sentences given or served though.

I'd probably just phone the guy and ask if he can disclose with you what the crime was (if that's legal?).

and how will the OP know if the guy is lying or not?

He could then ask if he would be okay with carrying out an enhanced CRB check. Although I'm not sure a CRB check is necessary for certain jobs so he could quite easily refuse.

are you sure this guy isnt just someone who doesnt want a job but the hob centre are forcing him to meet his qouta? so hes just bsing?:

That would be rather bizarre considering if he was found out his benefits would stop.

You can ask him to provide a Basic Disclosure certificate from Disclosure Scotland but this will only show unspent convictions.

Claiming you are sex offender who went to prison for 2 years would be an extreme way of not getting a job just to claim £60 a week (or whatever it is)

as an employer you have a 'duty of care' to others around you, to include any children that may come into contact with him. whether its your daughter or not.

you must ask for a 'full disclosure' CRB be done before any employment can commence, based on the information given by him. this is not optional.

if he is a child sex offender, and you dont do this, and he offends again through your employment, you are just as responsible.

personaly, i would not employ him, you have your daughter around, he is a convicted sex offender. it is not worth the risk.
