Considering a second car for pure fun

I was writing my own extensive post on this matter, but then deleted what I was typing when I read this as yours is bette :p.
I would love a Focus ST, but then it would be like my current Focus in the sense that it would not be a learning experience.
I walk to work but I would hate being carless, to which a 20 year old car is bound to do from time to time.

Ok, then I'm going to recommend an mr2 turbo, you should be able to pick up a tidy one for 2-2.5k, they're reliable, pretty fast and just great fun.

Any 1990s car is going to have issues with rust, just look carefully before you buy. Mine is the first car that I've worked on and have done quite a few jobs now, some jobs are awkward but persevere and you'll be fine.

OpenToSuggestions - MX-5 for sure, you liked and fitted in Ben's (-westy-) at the RR didn't you?
For the money they really as the best thing to get, cheap to buy, reliable and not that costly to fix if something breaks.

Was that the red one of the green one?
I was a passenger in the green one and sat in the driving seat of the red one. Both where MK1s afaik.
In the driving seat my head was close to, but not touching the roof, but I completely forgot to try out the pedals!

I have heard good things about them I must admit, but they're a lot more expensive than an MX5.

Of course I would have to consider whether I actually need two cars. I could only do this if the car was not old.

They're a lot more expensive because they are 220bhp+

The n/a is on a par price wise with the mx5 if not cheaper

If you aren't particularly bothered about it being a roadster or t top then you might want to consider a manual mivec fto - you'll get a decent one for 1500. Insurance can be bonkers though

If your feeling brave you can easily pick up a twin turbo soarer for less than £1500, around 280bhp and rwd, I think the engine is pretty similar to the ones in the supra.

Ive driven one of these quite a lot and it really is in another league of speed compared to most cars. :D

Last time I looked the MR2 was not more expensive than an MX5. Don't bother with the NA, pointless IMO.

An MR2 turbo is far more expensive than an MK1/MK2 MX5, at least from what my initial research has shown.

Why would I need to be feeling brave? Most are nails or they are easy to crash?

MX5 without question. You will get a nice little runner for that money and they are cheap to tweak with loads of options to make them sharper and quicker if you want.

Considering your mileage and your admission that you don't have very much money, a second car seems a very silly idea. Including the purchase price you have an extra lot of tax, mot, servicing, insurance and even more if you need to fix broken things. If you need the room then why not sell your car and buy a hot hatch? A diesel at your mileage seems inappropriate.

A focus st perhaps?

He wants a second car to mess about with and use on weekends.

He doesn't want to mess about with his current car because he uses it for travelling while at uni.

By the sounds of it he's not experienced in being hands on with cars, so the chances are hell break it or something and be without a car until he fixes it.

Something I regularly do and I am relatively experienced with the hands on stuff - if it gets too much the car can alwaus be sold anyway.

I disagree, the na is perfectly decent, whilst the turbo is undoubtedly in another performance league if the idea is just a fun car there's nothing really wrong with the na - no on/off boost makes it a bit more balanced on the corners too.

Dont get me wrong I've had both and its turbo every time but I can still see the appeal of the na

The issue is that whilst I walk to work and do not need two cars, I often travel home at weekends. Say I have the one car then I cannot do anything to it at home as I would be too worried that I would get stuck halfway through doing something.

I must say that I cannot find a £1500 MR2 Turbo that looks in good nick. If I had an MR2 I would really prefer the turbo version.
The Soarer seems very rare.

They exist but it'd be a rev 2 and may need a bit of tidying up -2k would be enough for a decent one, 2.5 ideally

Yeah I wouldn't bother with that first one -the caliper isn't a big deal but I'm not convinced the guy knows much about the mr2 in general.

Second is better but I think he's dreaming r.e the bhp and definitely dreaming about the claimed 0-60 time. You're after a halfway house really, check the owners clubs - cars tend to be overpriced initially but they're relatively hard to shift so soon come down

I have run a few quotes.
In Oct the Focus will have 3 years NCB against it. I ran an Admiral Multicar quote and it comes out at £1300 for fully comprehensive for the MX5 and £1500 for the MR2.
I think I could really argue them down as basically I am getting stung as I would have 0NCB on the second car but I've never had any points or claims against me.

I think I need to test drive a car to see if I want that one to begin with. Seeing a car an MX5 here, a GTO there, an MR2 somewhere else isn't going to narrow anything down!

Admiral should be able to mirror the NCB on the second car as they offered that to me in the past. :)
