Gigabyte Z77-D3H not posting

I've had the above board for 2 months now and running it with an i7-2700k (not OC'ed), GTX 560 and 16GB (4x4) Corsair XMS3 PC3-12800 with a few SSD drives and normal WD Caviars, using the latest F14 BIOS from Gigabyte as well.

Occasionally I would turn the machine on and it wouldn't post. The fans would spin for a few seconds, it would power down and then repeat. I was thinking it might be a loose component so I'd reseat everything, clear the CMOS and it would start next try.

Until today that is. I've reseated everything, including the CPU and put some fresh thermal paste on it. Tested every RAM stick in another machine and they are fine. Finally I took out everything but the CPU (+ HSF), RAM and GPU and same thing (USB + LAN disconnected too). Even taking out the GPU to see if it will post to the HD 3000 did nothing.

It's also not a power issue as the 650W PSU runs it with no issues when it did boot, and I even tried a 1000W PSU today with just the core components and it didn't boot.

Has anyone encountered similar issues with this or any other Z77 board? Or anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try next?

Additionally there seems to be some google results saying that a complete 15 min power drain is needed to sometimes boot the board, that sounds a bit extreme for a new board but giving it a try, though why it would work without it seems strange to me.

After 6 hours of googling last night it seems that Gigabyte still haven't fixed the cold boot loop issue that has plagued their boards in the past. The symptoms seem to be pointing towards the capacitor issue that has been known to affect that.

Tried some OCZ RAM last night as well, no difference, in fact I tried with no RAM and it wasn't working either, I wasn't even getting any beeps.

Also the D3H doesn't have a switch to swap to the backup BIOS, the only workaround for that is to force a power shutdown during POST but the board isn't even getting that far.

You have to invoke the backup BIOS as the D3H does not have a physical switch.

Power off completely and switch off at PSU. Wait for thirty secs.

Keep finger on the power button on case and only then switch on the PSU power switch.

As it starts up (let go of power button) it will get so far and then turn off at the PSU power switch. Wait a few seconds.

Then turn on at the PSU switch.

Then turn on at the case and you should see...

....it will tell you the main bios is corrupt and it is recovering from the backup bios.

Let it do this and then switch off and then wait a few seconds to switch back on and you are good to go.

Just to add...

When it has recovered it will then show you this...

for me that was the F8 bios it loaded so switch off and leave it for a few seconds so that it next boots from the main bios and thus you can flash it as you wish.

Tried that, didn't work. It's at the stage where I think it's not a BIOS issue as the capacitors aren't even charging to the point where the BIOS is able to kick in.

assembled outside th case to rule out shorts? install only one stick of ram no gpu,use onboard graphics no hdd or kb/mouse

keep trying as above to invoke back bios,it takes a few tries to get it right, makesure all your psu cables are plugged in 4/8 pin cpu powerplug and 24 pin mb plug

It took me many attempts before I could get the combination of buttons etc to eventually get it to the screen shown in the first photo. I'm not sure if removing it from the case etc helped as I did that and used the PSU switch and shorted the relevant pins to simulate the power switch being pressed.

The bios cannot "kick in" or post as, for me, it was corrupted by a bad beta bios release by gigabyte and thus needed to be recovered in the way described.

It was Wazza300 and Acebmxerover at the Tweaktown forums who encouraged me to persevere and got a positive outcome.

Sorry to bump an old thread guys but I'm desperate and running out of ideas. I have pretty much the same problem, on mine the PSU fan now just spins the once and turns off. I've been trying the technique to boot the back up bios but have had no luck whatsoever. Would anyone be able to elaborate on the technique a bit more? I've never even been able to boot this system once, all that happens is the PSU fan will just spin the once and nothing else, to get it to do this again I have to switch the PSU off and on again

seems like a lot of people are having issues with this board? im was planning to get this, guess i might change my choice now?

Get the Asus P8Z77VLX, I had this Gigabyte board and it was a nightmare wouldn't give video output with my 7950 and even with the IGP it froze sometimes, it seems that they are plagued with a dodgy batch for sure as some people have no problems.

You could ask before ordering if you are getting a rev 1.0 or rev 1.1 as I think the rev 1.1 are much better.

I bought the Asus instead after returning this Gigabyte and it has been a champ.

Can you try this,

Remove all ram.
PowerON.
PowerOFF.
Add a stick the furthest away from CPU.
PowerON, anything?
PowerOFF if not.
Move stick one slot closer and rinse and repeat this for all slots/ram.

Wish I'd have stuck with asus, lol well I've tried moving the ram and turning on and off and now stuck as it just keeps turning on and off every few seconds, I've checked all connections and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated thanks
