Hi all i am buying a new rig in march and wondering would this cpu be the one to go for best bang for buck in a gaming rig i am giving my current system to my son so would need one in march i dont think Haswell will be much of an improvement so i am not going to wait for it i am going to pair the cpu up with a Asus Rampage IV Extreme mobo what do you think

If Haswell is out in March, it may be the better one to go for.

But depending on budget, the i5-3570K is the best to go for since games don't use hyperthreading or 4+ cores effectively.

Wait for when the time is closer, when you have a proper budget.

I have a 3820 myself with a sabertooth board and its a fine chip I havent had any issues with any games or anything else. Mine is used with a GTX670FTW EVGA card and 16gb of vengeance ram and it flies.
In reviews the 3820 is compared to the 2700k or 3770k on ANANDTECH as well as some other good reviewing sites.
Its a good solid chip it doesnt really do anything the ivybridges dont so I would say its a matter of taste.

If it's March you'll be purchasing then i would honestly wait for Haswell or Ivy-E. However, the 3820 is a great chip :) i'm sure you'll be more than happy with it.

Thanks for the input guys i will see around the time as to what cpu but i dont think they will bring significant gains so i have read on here thats why im looking at the 3820

Well tbh you've not given much of a reason why he should go for an i5 and instead of asking more specific information about the OP's requirements you've just picked a CPU out of the air.

As for the 'best' CPU, for any purpose, the i5-3570K is not it. The 'best value' option is something else, so please avoid generalisations.

If the OP is planning multi-gpu then Haswell will offer no more benefit than IB or even SB, as the one thing that is known is that it will still only offer a single slot with full x16 PCI-E 3.0 lanes. It won't have anything like the 40 lanes available for SB-E.

So if multi-gpu is the order of the day then the i7-3820 offers more than Haswell will and will likely to still offer an upgrade to IB-E.

Thank you mate for the reply i tend to agree with what you said as well i have read the same thing so i think i will stick with the i7-3820

Using i7 3820 here and it's very nice chip. Worth going 2011 just for the better mobo choice imho, full PCI-E x 16 for multi GPU and quad channel memory etc.. Hopefully will get 8 core CPU down the line aswell :).

some reviews on latency.

Much better overall throughtput at the expense of a bit of latency. don't think would make a huge difference. The throughtput improvment is way more signatifcant.

Yes, but it's not what you call 'high'. A bit higher, but if you want to talk about high latency then jump into the AMD threads and show that there. Much more relevent then.

well I'll still be using 3820 when haswell comes out as there is no way it'll do more than 10% extra per clock unless something clever is not yet known. IB-E will then make it's way next autumn and both of us will probably trade up :) At least if you get stuck with a system you keep having to add gfx cards and ram to over the next couple of years cos nothing better comes out you'll have a board which can do everything with x79. I'm a bit biased because even coming from an i7 to this i7 3820 I've had such a lovely time. I literally bum socket x79.

If you go with the 3820 and want clocks higher than 4.3ghz then make sure to treat your self to some decent ram along with it, 1600mhz vengeance is currently holding my 3820 back in a big way.
