What is the appeal of sports games?

Picture the following:

Here I am, a hardcore PC Gamer [FPS, MMO's, RPG's, RTS etc] and I have a few "mates" that I know who are into gaming [mixed between PC and Console gaming], so we have some overlaps.

Now the other night my mate says "Hey do you wanna come over later, having a small get together/class reunion, we can get some gaming going"

Naturally I say yes and arrive at my mates house where there is a good 10-15people all sat in front of the TV playing Fifa.

I cannot stand Fifa and sorry for the generalization but the people who play it as well.

If I wanted to play football I would go outside. To me being around all my mates and having a kick around outside is 100% more fun than 15 of us sitting round a telly watching 2 of them play a 90 minute game.

When I game I want to emmerse myself in a reality that cannot be experienced normally. I can't just walk outside on a Monday morning and fight a dragon on the way to work now can I?

So what exactly is the point of playing football when we can just go outside?

Also, it seems like every Tom Dick and Harry [who in my opinion] are the worst sorts of gamers (casual console gamers) lose their mind over Fifa, it's like watching a melting pot of idiots when that game gets turned on.

Anyway, whilst I've mostly been talking about Fifa, the point I'm trying to bring up is what is the appeal of sport related games? and has anyone else noticed the sort of people that are attracted by games like Fifa or am I being a bit too harsh?
 
I like the odd bash on FIFA, and i'm not that bad!

I certainly don't play in online though as 98% of the people that do are the real dregs, bottom-of-the-barrel types who ragequit and whine if you beat them.

And I don't play football outside because i'd have a heart attack if I did. :p
 
I hate sweeping generalizations & the people that make them :)
So you don't like sports games, don't go to the next FIFA night round you're mates then, simple, but please don't judge others because they do.

Why play an FPS when you can go outside and play with water pistols?

Same reason people want to play as their favourite football club and challenge for the Champions League instead of playing a kickabout on the common.

I can judge whoever I please it's a free country. If I was aware it was going to be a FIFA night I would't have joined.
Also, Divinious you are missing the point, that was merely an experience that prompted my question about what the appeal in games like FIFA is? Because clearly I don't see it, thus why I'm so negative about it.
So please awnser the question next time before coming after me :)

Yes because playing an FPS with varied high powered weapons that kill people in gruesome ways directly compares with people playing with water guns. And you call my post stupid haha.
 
I like FIFA. There's not many better games that can be played with so many players in one lounge and all be able to join in at once on the same screen. Being football, it's pretty obvious what to do and is hence enjoyable and fun. What more is there to analyze? You state you do not like people who play FIFA... that's a LOT of people you are stereotyping right there.... millions.

Completely agree, I've never seen the point of any kind of sport games (other than maybe Tony Hawk, as face-planting concrete from a 10m drop at 50mph tends to hurt a little when you do it in real life!)
 
Also, OP, the evening you have described... can you suggest some better multi player games for 15 people all in one lounge? Have you got confused with a LAN party and a casual social gathering with some gaming?

Jay, are these people you are playing with on an online lounge or sitting next to you in real life?

Also, forgive my lack of knowledge about Fifa, but how many people can you have playing in one game? From all I've seen its always been 1 person controlling 1 team versus another.

No I cannot think of a game that would accomodate 15 people without some sort of LAN setup.
However, playing 4-way games like Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros is usually a popular choice at social gatherings and usually leads to lots of laughs.
At least the rounds are quick and people can swap out quickly instead of waiting for people to finish a long game of football.

Slight difference there - you can still play football, I can still skate, however I'd rather not end up needing facial reconstructive injury in A & E, while the worst injury you're likely to get playing football is a couple of bruised shins (unless you're one of those primadonnas who bursts into tears when they trip over a blade of grass :rolleyes:)

I think it's really yourself that has the problem, I drive to work so does that mean I can't playing racing sims? I like FIFA as I can build a great team or play for the club I support, it's also good for social gatherings as its a good "pass the pad" game. Beat em ups are good for that also. I like most types of games plus sports games. It's not people like like sports games that have the problem its wannabe gaming snobs like yourself that is the issue.
