General Headphone Audio

Senny 595's for my AV amp for late night movies and music (must not keep Mrs S awake now)
Shure 530's with custom moulds for my everyday phone music listening
Asus Vulcan ANC's for on my computer for gaming.

Am a bit of a tart when it comes to headphones and must say, I do like the look of those quad 1964 ears......don't think I could justify the expense at the moment though...but when my numbers come in, they are top of my list for phones.

On an aside, I did have a pair of Etymotic ER6i's with custom moulds, but the moulds where fairly crap. Ended up giving them to my niece (with some silicone sleeves). SHe was wanting a pair of Dr Dre Beats nasties (she is 15....:rolleyes:) and was not convinced until she plugged them in and heard the difference. She wont be without them now and am taking her to get some impressions for moulds when next there

Pretty much took you on your recommendation as well as reading the review, so I'm in your debt sHo0sH :D

Even after using them for hours a day, I still get shivers down my spine when I use them cause you just hear so much detail. Even for the same track I hear small details which I've never heard before :)

@mrk: I know what you mean about the pouch but then they do come in a pretty tough formed outer casing so its only doing the job of inner protection :)
 
Is it even possible to get sound of a tiny pair of earphones to say a HD595 ?

I had the hd595s once and totally awesome wipe space soundstage and good mids/highs and lows, one would imagine a tiny pair could not replicate this noise ?
 
It's surprising but IEMs can get close. They sit right in the ear canal so bass and treble can be very detailed. All depends on the phones in question though and the tips you use. I don't like the memory foam ones that came with mine, the silicone ones seem to offer a more isolated fitting.

My HD580's are beaten by my ACS T1's. But for the price, they damn well should be.

But, there's something insanely lovely about my old HD580's. :D

Without using a crossfeed filter you don't really get any sort of soundstage, but still quality is excellent. With good IEM's you'll get more detail from your music than you would from circumaural cans or speakers - it's just different. Remember that these go right into your ear canal creating a seal and the better ones have multiple drivers (some have 8!) and are custom fitted.

HD595's aren't very good headphones btw, amazed what Senn charge for them these days. I paid less for 580's and 600's, and only a little more for 650's!
 
What makes you say the 595s aren't very good headphones? That's genuinely the first time I have read such a thing in all the years since release.
 
Just picked myself up some brand new Audio Technica WS55i 's from a popular auction site for £50, loving them dearly through my minidisc player (minidisc > mp3 tbh).

Just need to sort out a decent sound card so i can enjoy them on my computer (any suggestions on the best card at the cheaper end of the range?)

For the price, compared to the competition, etc - and probably I'm used to much better Senns with similar design/comfort so when I wear them I'm wondering what's broken. And are they not almost the same in construction as the 555's AND using the same driver?

People sackride Sennheiser here and elsewhere, it's how they get away with charging so much and increasing prices. Few people actually have their truly good models that gave them a good reputation with audio fans in the first place; at best the 595's, usually a lot less ...or fakes. Likely better than what they're used to, but there's much better out there for less.
 
I just checked the current price....When I got mine they were less than £100!

I too heard about the same driver as HD555 debate but honestly, I had the HD555 for several years then had a pair of Grado and now have the HD595 going on 2 years. The 595 sound is crisper more detailed but with less bass than the HD555. I did mod my HD555 to remove the baffle that supposedly made them into HD595 but the real 595 still sound better.
 
i picked up a set of Yamaha EPH-100's this week for use when I'm sat at my desk...I wanted something good but not bank breakingly expensive as I wasnt sure I'd notice a difference over my old £15 duty free purchased JVC's.

Got them yesterday....wow....just wow.

I'm listening to tracks I've heard a 100 times before and notice so much more detail. The instruments and voices just stand out so much.
I think I'm a convert to "decent" earphones.
 
It's a good feeling isn't it!

Listened to Michael Jackson tracks on the walk home yesterday and was surprised at the. Instruments. His music suits the VSonic nicely.
 
i was tempted by the Vsonic's after reading your posts and others over at head-fi but I stopped as i didnt think i'd be able to notice the difference. Part of me wishes I had now :D

The only downside is trying to get the right set of buds to fit, but then coming from a cheap pair its probably just going to take a bit of time to get used to them
 
Yeah I've settled on 2 pairs of buds and can't decide which ones I like the fit of most! Too much choice lol.

I've not done the VSonic recommended 100 hours burn in yet, probably at 25 hours so far too.

mrk - Stick them in the PC overnight whilst you sleep and then in a drawer, it will be sorted in a few days.

I just picked some D2000's up from the MM and my god they are fun, a little bit warm (heat wise) for gaming sessions though. I think I may even prefer them to the HD650's!

you may just need to take regular hp breaks, in hot weather u will find that is also a good idea lol
 
Well Not 100 hours quite yet but been lying on my bed with these plugged into my S3 and the difference from day 1 to now is very pleasing, now they sounded excellent on day 1 but the details are popping now and they're very lively. "Leggy Blonde" by Flight of the Conchords is something else when the second half kicks in from the chorus and the instruments are all around you.

It's worth noting that I have settled on one set of ear tips, the turquoise coloured ones as none of the others give the same sound due to these fitting better inside my ear and the silicone flaps creating a nice seal. The foam tips fit nicely and tight but the bass was compromised using them.

I am loving these IEMs, if this keeps up over the next 70 odd hours then I'm going to have a hard time deciding on what to wear at the computer, these or the HD595.
