Virus? My computer was locked apprently by West Yorkshire Police! Pic inlcuded

GRRRRRRRRR my nobbler of a father in law has just paid a pc shop in cambridge £100 deposit to remove this virus and another nearly £100 for 'better security'.

He panicked when he saw the message and didn't even bother asking anyone

Nice way to rip off a 75 year old!

Name and shame?

I have 'repaired' 3 computers in the last 4 months with this so called virus thing. It is just from downloading some dodgy stuff on the net.

Nothing to worry about. A simple safe mode boot and system restore to an earlier date usually sorts this out.

Indeed, Name and shame the shop. Any computer shop taking nearly 200 quid to remove a virus and install AV needs stringing up for all to see

All I know is it was a pc repair shop in cherry hinton cambridge. I have an idea which one it is because there isn't much to choose from but until he's told me himself which one it is I will refrain from naming.

I'm as angry with him tbh, why the hell he didn't just ring my wife or me and ask first! Especially as he's done loads to help us out over the years.

I think he saw the child porn warning and panicked.

:(

Since when is Cardiff in west yorkshire :/

You didn't feel the earthquake then? :)

We're actually quite lucky if you think about it.

Imagine if these morons started getting the details, spelling and grammar right. I see a whole lot more people falling for it then.

ahh man ask for refund !

combofix and malwarebytes coulda saved the pc and free

This popped up on our family PC recently, my mum had a fit because she thought my brother had been looking at dodgy sites. Fixed with a re-boot into safe mode and removal of the startup registry items, followed by a good clean with malwarebytes.

I hate to think what would happen if somebody like my grandparents ended up with this virus, as I suspect they would panic more than anything.
