Biocides

Hi chaps.

Just asking whether I need to add a biocide to my loop. I have just got it up and running, and am using distilled water plus a bit of mayhems dye - no biocides in it though. Was reading that some people never use biocides - just distilled water - but wanted to check whether this was OK. I know using a biocide means making the water more conductive, but I want to prevent algea growth if possible.

Any ideas - what have you done?

If something that can grow in that environment got in while filling, then without biocide you will have growths.

Also, I'm pretty sure that that liquid is already somewhat conductive now that it's flowing through metals?

Yeah true. Thanks. Do you know where I can get PT Nuke from? Have looked and nowhere sells it it seems to be. Probably being blind.

I don't, but lots of people report using it without problems - but then lots of people use distilled water with no biocide and also don't get problems

I would use PT nuke or mayhems if adding a biocide

What is in your loop? Any EK nickel?

PT nuke and mayhems are both the same thing - copper sulphate

Some people say they are fine to use but others say to stay away as they make water acidic and might cause corrosion (apparently)

or there is Nuke PHN which doesn't make it acidic

I'm also not sure that the tiny amount of copper sulphate that you add will make all that much difference but you should be testing the fluid periodically with a ph test anyway, particularly if you are running DI water and additives instead of a premix

Call me paranoid but its an artificial water containing system that when operational maintains pretty ideal conditions for breeding legonella. Why wouldn't you want biocide in it.

The key thing with copper sulphate is not to be tempted to add too much, literally one or two *drops* for an average loop. I.e. don't squirt half a bottle in "to be sure".

I'll be adding a biocide a week after I have filled the loop. Will it be OK to add it then, or will I have to empty the loop all over?

adding the biocide after a week or two will be fine

Thanks for this - put my mind at ease.

Silver coil - nothing wrong I guess. Just read some people who had issues with it. I guess there are issues with everything. I'm just going with what feels right, intuitively so to speak.

I'm running acetal blocks, but I think the bottom plate s nickel. Yes they are EK.

Here's a picture of my set up, not that it is up and running (sort of). Will be adding drive bays on the right side of the case.

ah I'm just curious really cause I have planned to use it in my upcoming build.

EK's nickel blocks have notorious 'flaking' issues. They even give a warning with their new blocks. Not to say you will run into problems but If I were you I would use a premix (such as mayhems x1) and avoid killcoil/biocide. Neither of them have anti corrosion while almost all premixes do.
