Biocides

ah I'm just curious really cause I have planned to use it in my upcoming build.

I'm not sure that silver kill coils work. There are also many bacteria/fungi etc. that are resistant to the effects of metals and will grow eventually anyway

if anyone has any data I'd love to see it (on kill coils in water systems - not silver in general as a contact inhibitor)

something like copper sulphate or benzalkonium chloride definitely does act as a biocide, but on coils I'm not convinced - if you are going to use a biocide, may as well use one that you know definitely works as a biocide

the only test data I can find on silver in a water system is actually an activated carbon filter WITH a silver MESH... so the filter traps the bacteria and the silver mesh kills it - but in a PC system the water (and any bacteria) flows around the silver coil freely and isn't trapped against it for any appreciable amount of time... if kill coils worked then copper blocks on their own should also work as a biocide (which they clearly don't)

Spixelspixel has got me all nervous now. It's too late for me to change the GPU blocks (partly nikel) and I have aready filled the loop - too far along the process now to empty it all, clean everything up and start again with pre-mix. I hope these new blocks are better than the old one, and I am not rocking full nikel plated GPU blocks after all. I guess all I can do at this stage is add Mayhems biocide and hope for the best. I'll have to keep an eye on the loop to see whether it's all going to hell or not :)

Silver coils ("kill coils" the name belong to a "I&H" and any one else using that name it actually doing it illegally) work but only in sealed systems with no windows and were no natural UV light can get to the water. This stops things growing. They do not work on there own in a system with a window and UV light (sun light).

This is the fact a lot of people who jump on the band wagon forget to say. We have noted this in our own testing and don't rely on hearsay.

All so another note you do not get enough silver Ions from the silver coil for at least two weeks after putting in the silver coil for it to be effective. Its normally best to leave the coil in the water for at least two keeps before adding to the system. We all so recommend 1 Coil Per 1/2 Ltr as this increases the effectiveness of silver in the system and produces more silver ions at a much faster rate making it more effective.

Now if you really into getting them silver ions working the best thing you can do is take the coils and create a Collide with them (silver + water + electric) and you can read up on the net how to do this.

or you could just add un-natural UV light which will act as a sterilisation method if you get the right type (though get it just marginally wrong and it's carcinogenic, ho hum what to do)

the en blocks have stopped this! been running mine a year with mayhems fluid and have had 0 problems! ek screwed up with the first lot of non EN blocks.. they sorted this and sent out new blocks to ppl (en ones at that!)

When you say mayhems fluid do you mean premix or dye? I think it's the copper based biocide that does the damage, if I have understood properly.

thanks, ye just saved me £5 down the drain and a headache when the fungus arrives.

I'll be getting some of the mayhems copper sulfate stuff then, seeing as you took the time to comment on this for me. a lot of the big companies can learn a thing or 2 from you :-)

The warning comes with their brand new CSQ blocks saying not to use silver kill coil or copper sulphate biocide (ptnuke/mayhems biocide)

OP, your blocks are full nickel, the only difference is the plexi top/accetal top. You should use a pre mix which has anti corrisive just to be safe.

I use the mayhems pastel fluid.. and ek would say that.. there old notice use to say ONLY use ek coolents!

Well you can understand why they say that since they are a business... with this warning they say you can use any pre mix. I don't think they would warn against using silver/biocide unless they had good reason to. Copper Sulphate biocide makes the water more acidic, which probably corrodes the nickel plating. Pre-mixes have anti corrosion and anti algae already so its obviously a better choice.
