@ FPS Players - The Sniper Rifle

Depends what game really. Games like BF3 i am absolutely rubbish with a sniper, games like UT2004 i enjoy it.

In bf3 there are some servers that dont allow people to use a sniper :\

I dont really use Snipers, ill try them and have a mess around but they dont suit how I like to play which is just run and gun. I just like fragging, which means suicide runs into enemy spawns to try and get as many as I can and rinse/repeat... sniper rifles dont really cut it for that.

I'd be interested in an MP FPS without a sniper rifle.

I honestly think CS would be better without it.

Say what?!

CS:GO possibly, because it's appalling. But classic CS? The AWP is a game maker. You'd struggle in any major competition without a competent sniper.

I've never really played sniper in MP FPS either, always preferring the assault style of play - up in your face and personal... But recently I've been dabbling with the sniper class in BF3, and I have to say that pulling off a long range headshot definitely leaves you feeling satisfied. Sadly it takes me a whole clip + to get a single hit atm, but I'm slowly getting better.

The Sniper rifle isn't all about camping and long range, it's also usually the most powerful gun in the game and if you have a decent aim and reflexes is very effective close/medium range as well.

I'm a massive recon ho in BC2, but that's because I think it's the best class, whilst also being pretty well balanced. Not talking about long range camping mind, the c4 and motion sensors (and of course the close range effectiveness of the bolt-actions) are what really make the class.

Can't say I'm fond of snipers in CSGO from my brief experience, but then I'm no good at the game so don't really understand the class balance well enough to draw a proper conclusion.

Ripping an enemies head off with a single precision shot. That's mans work.

Everything else is just this:

Damn straight it feels good. BF3. 400m+ headshot crew checking in. Bipod out. M98B + 12x scope. Now we are talking. I only play conquest large. I play recon and let my team know where the enemy is - as well as taking down helicopters ;). I move around the map, never camp. I only fire when I know I am on for a kill. Not showing my position. Hardcore.

Never really bothered with another class. Same went for America's Army.

There is a good range of sniper rifles in arma 2, many have the ability to alter for ‘range’, windage’, ‘drop’ etc. Can be very precise and accurate, but if you don’t hit with the first, then you could ruin a planned manoeuvre by your team. The sound of the bullet, not being fired if your far enough away, but hitting the ground nearby your enemy if you miss, will mean they are quickly on to trying to find you.
Takes some getting to know how to do it well, but with a2 you can set up 'pop-up targets' on any map in the editor and practise sniping from different distances.

Comparing fast-paced FPS games with a milsim like Arma2 though is a bit pointless ;)

I find the people that whinge and whine about snipers in general are either those that a) cannot use them themselves, or b) don't know how to adapt to play against them. They're not something that can just be picked up and played with and expect to get kills. They're the weapons you have to spend time to get used to them, how to "hone your skills", great reflexes and accuracy is what makes a sniper, not a gun-ho Rambo-wannabe that runs around firing more bullets than they can count.

Sniper rifles are an essential asset to any FPS game imo.

The sniping in ArmA 2 is on another level to anything else I've seen. Wind, bullet drop, correlation, scope coordinates, ballistic weight, caliber, terrain type and makeup effecting mavity, shot gauging etc.

Its a whole game within itself!
