@ FPS Players - The Sniper Rifle

Only games for me that came close to proper sniping were the novalogic delta force and joint ops games. In theese you had to play about with scope settings, adjusting the scope reticle, allowing for bullet drop. often crawling into position for ages to get that perfect shot. In bf3 it's a bit ridiculous with the stupid sun glint from scopes, (even on tehran highway, a night time map). In bf3 i tend to spend more time spotting targets rather than shooting as it's not a great representation.

In BF3 sniping is about covering the MCOMs so that your team can cap them, using your spawn beacon and MAV. Can't stand those snipers who sit on the edge of metro in a corner sniping people as they walk past - no help to your team.

I hardly play sniper, but mainly because I'm rubbish at it.

Although I have had success playing sniper in TF2, although that usually ends up in sniper vs sniper mini battles while everyone else gets on with actually completing the objectives :D

I stopped playing long range sniping after BFBC2. I find it too boring and not enough involved in pushing the team objectives. I also don't think that the team spotting argument i read so often counts as spotting across the map is so easy anyway.
Sniping pilots is a questionable objective in the bigger scheme of team targets (even though it is very satisfying when it works out).
I can understand that some player might find this an attractive role, I just don't want to have my team full of them and hate when trying to spawn on team members you only see guys in the flipping hills miles away taking pot-shots at the enemy. Yes I do play recon from time to time but not sitting in the hills with bolt rifles. I find snipers in my team more irritating then snipers in the opposing enemy as I have the theory that the team with most long range snipers tend too loose most of the games.

Snipers are only annoying when you come across one with some skill. on BF3 they are so easy to take out, Just rock up in a tank or a heli or even a jet if you fancy it. knifed loads in the back also. I used to play recon on bfbc2 as I had c4 and could take on tanks etc, Now if a tank rolls up you don't have much hope.

I think most games represent snipers poorly, Arma 2 with the ACE mod is probably the closest to real life what with proper bullet drop & wind effecting you're shots, in order to make a proper long range shot you need to know the distance to the target, wind speed & direction, you have tools to help you such as the laser rangefinder & the Kestral windspeed indicator it really is a challenge to make a shot. no other game comes close BF3 is the worst for realistic sniping IMO & as far as COD goes the maps are too small to bother sniping.

Sniping is the most fun in CSS for me, nothing like taking out 5-6 players one after the other in a single round.

It's also very gratifying in BF3, not amazing at the longe range stuff though.

Isn't the latter more about what sniping is than the former? You don't see snipers in real world combat situations running around with the guys with M4's do you?

Well... Soviet doctrine had squad / platoon level snipers. It gets called "Designated Marksman" or "Sharpshooter" in a lot of armed forces now but the role has actually varied according to time and place and doctrine.

In something quake-ey I think it's a good risk/reward thing and rewards skill to have a high damage / slow reload weapon.

However in a "realism" shooter I think mostly the maps aren't big enough so I dislike sniper rifles in those games because inevitably the dev team ends up trying to balance all of the weapons around these small maps which leads to a weird reality distortion effect where the other rifles are weak and not accurate.

In the couple of games where they don't do this people very often plump for an assault rifle with a scope for general usability and to comepensate for FOV vs how the eye actually works unless it's a really big map.

BF3/BC2 kind of have maps big enough but because of how the objective game modes work mostly snipers are useless. The team that's all sitting back plinking is often going to lose by not pushing the objectives.

Cringing @ how sniping is potrayed in these games. If it was like this in RL all of us would be out there with Draginovs, Barretts & Accuracy Internationals :D

But these are games so I guess we can cut em some slack!

Funnily how no one has any qualms about then jumping in to a helicopter, jet or tank though :D
Not quite sure of you're meaning, do you mean snipers getting in a helicopter, jet or tank or are you saying anyone getting in them? would you prefer a pilot/driver class to be added?

Strictly from a CS standpoint, I find it funny how the people who always complain about snipers and say they never use them, can't even get a frag with one if they were given 10 seconds to line up a shot :D It is actually one of the hardest guns to use in CS.

thing is are we talking simlike sniping as in a portrait of real life or a video game fun type sniping which is fps sniping.

arguing how unrealistic most video games are is quite funny as they are in a virtual world :D

I'm hopeless as a sniper in BF3 but often give it a try anyway on maps like Karkand.

I heard that the majority of infantry kills in Afghanistan were actually from snipers during the early part of the war.
