Final Fantasy 7 Re-release

I loved ff VIII to, if square enix has success with FF VII it should be possible to do it with VIII as it was released on pc to, i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The real issue is that FF7 and FF8 is that it's probably much much better just to emulate the games rather than suffer through Squeenix's stupid DRM. The recent emulators support hardware acceleration is pretty good.

This is only if you don't want to mod the game at all.

First time I played FF8 I thought it was meh, re played it just before FF9 came out and thought it was awesome! ;)

Never did get the PC version of FF8 though :(

So its just the same game, but with built in cheats and phoney achievements to try and keep you interested.

Let me stop you there, I'm out.
Yes, but it's a game that's not available anywhere else to buy if you don't own a Playstation 3. The purpose of this re-release was to offer the option to buy the PC version of the game again. It was not to reboot the franchise or to improve upon the past experience. £8 is a fair price for that, I'd say.

Not sure where people got the ideas about all these technical improvements - if there were to be any, there's no way Square wouldn't have included them in the announcement along with the character booster / cloud save features.

We were given what we were told we'd be given... why the furore?

Because you'd at least expect them to include the higher quality soundtrack instead of a slightly better version of the tosh in the original version. Granted the Battle backgrounds actually look better from what I've seen of it and the FMVs are better but other than that it's just the original version with a whole bunch of crap added in that makes it arguably worse. You can't even import a save game anymore because of the save sync feature included.

For the people crying about no graphics update and waiting until later to buy this game, well you got till 12th September and then the price goes up to £9.99. Don't complain about that if you miss it since it will be your own fault.

Don't worry, it's just like the PC version of FF7 (Crap) but with a tiny fraction of the mod support.

PC version of FFVIII was at least way better than the job they did for FFVII.

Better graphics support, better Hardware Acceleration and the FMVs were encoded more efficiently too.

MIDI music was still crap, but the mods available for that were much better and made it closer to the PSOne version.

Of the two games, I have more luck running FFVIII on a modern PC without too much trouble or patching.

I have it on the PC. After playing the PS1 version, the midi sound tracks in the PC version were horrible. I’m sure it had an installation disc too so it was 5 discs instead of 4 like the PS1.

The only advantage was the better graphics (got graphic corruption sometimes with my Voodoo 2 enabled) and the built in LCD/Pocketstation game for the Chocobo’s.

I think it’s a shame people got hyped up about the re-release of FF7 on PC and users still have to go back and mod game to make it see fit for stuff SquareEnix should have put in this re-release already.

For nostalgia, here's 3 screenshots that I took of the original PC game back in 2001. Sprites seem to be a bit different from the screenshots I've seen in this thread so far, especially with Cloud. Of course, these are only in 640x480.

Yeah, this version supports higher resolutions which makes the field models look quite a bit better.

Yeah the music is no big deal now since it is easily replaceable unlike the old PC version which required a bit more effort.

I think what's really important overall is that this a version that ****ing works on modern PCs! Could it have been a better job, sure, but this what matters! :p
