A/AS results

Congrats to those who got what they needed & commiserations to those who didn't.
My youngest got an A*AA so he's off to Oxford (St Anne's College) in October doing biology, we're very proud :)
Congratulations to him! I finished Biol Sci at Oxford 3 years ago. Great times!

How difficult is it to get an A* in Maths these days at A2 level? What percentage is it approximately?

The papers are easier than say a decade ago (depending on board) but the grade boundaries are defined by everyone else's performance e.g. say the top 9% on a paper get an A*, on a hard paper that could mean 85% raw mark was an A* while on an easy paper that could be a 97%. The only thing that can change the percentage of grades as people keep complaining about is if boards change the percentages that they let get certain grades. That's a gradual and inevitable process as boards promise better grades to schools in order to get them to use their boards.

All these people ranting about quality of Uni, please shut up yeah?

A close friend of mine got a 1st from Manchester Metropolitan University in BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance. Terrible Uni yeah? He is now in his final year of ACA at PwC.

A degree from one of the lowest ranked in the whole country and he managed to get a job at the largest accounting firm in the world.

1. Great sample size you have there
2. Being employed isn't the greatest achievement in the world. PwC is big, but that means very little. Lloyds is huge but if you're working the phones nobody cares.

If your close friend winds up at the top of the pile at pwc, then it might be a notable exception. As it is it's barely even notable.

Not really sure anyone is ranting about quality of unis....

Anyway, you don't necessarily need a degree to do accounting at one of the top firms.

You know looking at it, my results weren't that bad. I was two UMS marks off a C in Chemistry, so really all i need to do at A2 is bump everything up a grade, to get ABB - which i would be very happy with.

"All i need to do..."

Yeah but A2 is pretty hard compared to AS.
Just retake some AS modules, it would be the easiest way to get your grade up. Also sometimes the grade boundaries are low in January if you are lucky.

I went up grades from AS to A2, its definitely possible!

Ha, i don't know what's worse - that i'm an idiot for not picking up on it or that the state of the media is such that that article isn't outside the realms of possibility :p

I did absolutely terrible. Was expected though. On the other hand, I'm doing a 3rd year at College and already have enough Ucas points to do the course I want to do at uni.

What makes it better is that I was told I had failed ICT, multiple times (AFTER being told that I would pass, multiple times again) by the head of the course. Official results say otherwise - Which she supposedly checked. Yeah, alright.

Congrats to everyone who got what they were after, this thread made me realise that mine were 7 years ago now. Eesh. Much has changed, but I'm fairly sure I posted in a thread on here about them at the time :p

I'm quite nervous about uni now.

I don't drink and as a result think I won't fit in that well.

When I was in 6th form I didn't get on with many people of the same age and I did badly.

When I went to college the following year lots of people were in their mid 20's and I got on with them really well, the result of that was I went from DEEU to BBB in the space of one year.

Has anyone got any advice about starting uni?

Man up and drink.

But seriously, university is the best place for starting fresh. You can pretty much reinvent yourself, or rather recycle parts of you that you don't like. It's also the easiest environment for making friends as everyone will be in the exact same boat as you - terrified. Just don't be a total nob-cheese and you will find a great bunch of friends no problem.

As a side point, any reason why you don't drink? I've never understood the desire not to!

This.

I;'ve got friends from uni that don't drink and they fit in just fine

Did slightly better than expected which was good ;)

Though about adjustment, but then stuck with my firm as I'm pretty happy with where I'll be going.
