I know most of the cost of petrol nowadays in the Uk is just tax and that the retailer is not to blame for the ripoff prices. In the Uk we got probably some of the most expensive petrol in the world but the petrol quality is just the same anywhere else nothing special.Seriously if they charged the same price over at the states or anywhere else as we do for petrol or gasoline there would be riots and noway would anyone be happy with paying that for sure.Over here no one seems too bothered with paying far more for petrol than pretty much anywhere else in the developed world. How do they get away with it in the Uk ?

You have to think about what a lot of the tax gets used for though...

For example, the USA may have cheaper fuels, but they don't have free healthcare like we do with the NHS.

As british we always overlook the good from the bad things :p

Libyan Arab Jamahiriya - 17c/l based on a crude price of 51c/l

Nice subsidy there! Works out to be about 12p/l - I'd fill my car for about £7.20, instead of £80.

The average fuel price in Europe, as of 2 days ago, is €1.62 or thereabouts. The UK average is €1.65. Hardly "most expensive petrol in the world". Yes - we pay a lot, and yes, some other countries pay less, but I'm sure they are taxed somewhere else to compensate.

TBH I'd not mind losing the vehicle excise duty and having that put on the petrol. That way you can't have a untaxed car and the amount of tax you pay reflects the miles and economy your car can do.
Some peoples cost might go up, but you can't not pay it.

The European average is skewed by some bonkers priced fuel in places like Norway. With the exception of Germany and France, most of Europe is cheaper than the UK - under £1 a litre in Switzerland, just over £1 a litre in Czech Republic, Austria etc.

Edit: Using June figures, it's gone up a bit since then as this demonstrates:

It would be interesting to work out how much fuel would have to go up by, in order to recoup the loss from scrapping VED.

So much like a common sense option.. you wonder why the government hasnt thought of it....

what would it cost the end user..? 1-2p per litre maybe?

The main issue I have is that they charge VAT on the Fuel Duty... I mean, tax on a tax?

I believe (though may be wrong) that they can drop circa 10-15ppl if they didn't do that i.e. Vat on the fuel but not on the duty.

You'll just pay it else where. They can't drop overall tax intake. So it makes no difference really.
