Is a GTX 690 overkill?

is a 690 faster than 2 7970s lightly oced? Because I'm about to get a £299 2nd card here and just use about 1050 core on them. I'd of course go gtx690 if it's a lot faster etc, is there a certain about less watts the 690 would use and lets assume I'm also overclocking the 690 a little. Thought about it because they are popping up on the web for £750-799 in loads of places now.

I don't know at the above question. That said, just thought of something else. I think the 7990's (AMD's answer to the dual GPU market) are rumoured to be due in August? So this month, fairly soon? Might be worth doing some research on that release date if you can wait.

690 is overkill. Why not get a 2GB 670? This will keep you happily gaming for quite along time. That's what I would do if I was staying with 1 1080P monitor.

the only thing wrong with the 690 is its price, plus it is maybe too powerful.

because on 1080p tv my guess is the 7970 will still be ok in 2 years time..... lets face it, there arent many ``really good`` shooters around right now, or due out soon, that will stress it, not even Crysis 3 or Doom 4

the only trouble might be, is if someone releases a 55'' tv with a resolution greater than 1080p, some sort of Smart tv, that is dedicated for gaming as well.... you just dont know do you !

dunno about years, i had a 4870x2 and eurgh the performance sucked at max settings in most games to the point where swapping to a single gtx480 felt smoother despite the lower average frames. Quite happy to know a 7990 is coming though. Nothing stops me paying 299 for another 7970 then the month after selling them both for £290 each on ebay losing £20 only and trading up to the 7990 to get my wattage and cooling back to normal.

Thanks for the all the replies. I know its hard to say but do you think a GTX 690 will last roughly 2 and a half years of gaming at maxed/high settings @ 1080p?

btw is there such a monitor with a higher resolution and 120hz as I like to play fps?

I will put my neck on the line and say "Yes" (purely from your question concerning Maxed/High). Don't hate on me if I am wrong though...Consoles will be the ruling factor.

I wouldn't have thought putting a hot card like a GTX690 inside of a Prodigy was a good idea. If you can afford to buy a GTX690 then you should have enough money to buy a sensible case to help cool such a card.
