You have to think about what a lot of the tax gets used for though...

For example, the USA may have cheaper fuels, but they don't have free healthcare like we do with the NHS.

Fuel tax is used to fund the NHS? I didn't know that.

The government seems pretty inefficient at spending tax money here tbh, there's allot of waste, and a certain amount of corruption too. But I think some of the reason is that they want people to drive less, there are a allot of cars here for such a small country.

It would be interesting to work out how much fuel would have to go up by, in order to recoup the loss from scrapping VED.

Using's Glacus's figures about 11p but dependant on the amount of untaxed cars you could use less as everyone one will be now taxed.
Also you would be able to to save money on trying catch/fine/crush untaxed cars.

Tax is tax, it all goes into the same pot (more or less).

VED/fuel duty is not ring fenced to repair our roads.

LMAO .... Bookmark this thread .... Petrol prices are dirt cheap at the moment.

I think I had calculated that by the time my son picks up the keys for his car it'll cost £4-5 a litre

You'll just pay it else where. They can't drop overall tax intake. So it makes no difference really.

This is always such a frustratingly annoying point, it could be used to support ANY tax rise for ANY reason.

The European average is skewed by some bonkers priced fuel in places like Norway. With the exception of Germany and France, most of Europe is cheaper than the UK - under £1 a litre in Switzerland, just over £1 a litre in Czech Republic, Austria etc.

Edit: Using June figures, it's gone up a bit since then as this demonstrates:

looking at that us and Poland are the only 2 countrys that charge more diesel, most countrys diesel is a lot cheaper, thats what drives me nuts

It's a true point though, until they cut the expenditure, which they are trying to do, then we are stuck paying the amount. You can shuffle it about. But ultimately on average you'll be taxed the same amount.
I would love to see simpler, less avoidable tax system, which would also mean, less expenditure on issuing and enforcing it. But with out a massive change in tax and expenditure as a whole, we'll pay the same tax.

true, but I know of so many people in my building who drive 3-5 miles to get to work.
even 10-15 is easy to do and really anything less than that you are going to be faster on a bike!

I think you have to qualify the area / time of day.. I cycle 2.5 miles to work which takes me a total of 20 minutes door to desk, and on busy days it can take half an hour by car, not including defrosting car if applicable, walking from car to desk etc. (that and there is no free parking within a mile, that's another story though as I wouldn't drive myself to work), other days it can be about 7 minutes or less..

But it's very true. The Governement either has to cut expenditure or maintain the tax base. Look at the ongoing hysterics over the attempts of the current Government to reduce spending levels. Which I believe will only put us back to 2008 levels, equating to about a 3.5 % cut. The Unions, oppostion, and media are reacting as if it's the end of the welfare state! There really is no reason to believe the Goverment can sucessfully cut expenditure. Any cut on fuel duty will therefore have to be compensated else where. It's a sad state of affairs, I'd love to be proven wrong.
