Virgin Media Discussion Thread

You need a new router. WRT54GL is only good for 40Mb/s.

The 40mbs is from the superhub, I had 10mbs from the WRT54GL. The superhub wireless is so bad though, my main gaming PC is upstairs from the hub/ router and the signal is terrible. Running a speed test on that PC I get 1mb/s :-/

If I could get WRT54GL to give me good signal upstairs (which it does) I'd be happy with 40mb/s for the time being!

Got a question about the £22.50 broadband tariff. I've been on 10mBit/s for years now but their products page said that customers who pay £22.50/month can get up to 30mBit.

http://store.virginmedia.com/broadband/compare-broadband/index.html

Just ran the test from speedtest.net which gave me 9.77mB down and 1.00mB up, so I'm obviously still on 10mB.

Do I have to contact the sales dept and get myself changed to 30mB?

I remember having to contact sales before because when NTL changed over to Virgin, I was still paying the old £25 NTL fee where new customers were paying about £21 for the same speed. I thought that was a bit unfair that they were getting the cheaper rate and that I had to pull my finger out to get likewise.

what the hell is wrong with VM's packet loss at the moment, i can't play anything due to horrendous packet loss which only started 3 days ago and hasn't stopped.

Since then loads of posts popping up on thier tech forum for the same problem but from all over the south (that i can see).

I just ran speed test about 6 times, it'll run at full speed (30mb) then just drop to 1mb / 4mb/ 10mb back to 1 then back to 30.

The packet loss annoys me more though as i can't do anything with it.

This is what my packet loss looked like on the second day

And this is what it's like trying to play with it...

I've been having issues with slow websites today, changed to googles DNS servers and everything is A-ok!

Don't know if it is the same thing you've got but I'm getting my full 60/6 and all websites load much much faster.

Blimey, I'm now getting higher speeds than ever. Almost 70mb/s for a 60mb/s connection. Most I ever had before was 67mb/s. Is that likely to be the R36 firmware improving speeds?

What were the key features and intentions of the new R36FW? Improvement in the speeds and better layout? I've looked at your postings on the VM Site forum, so I really don't know. I myself have the Ambit 256 and my own router setup and I hardly ever get any problems, so it just goes to show it is the hubs that may be the route of the problems.

Here's my test for 10Mb/s:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2123950115.png

Awesome result if you ask me. I hardly ever get a problem with the Ambit 256 and my own router. Oh yeah if you're wondering why I am on 10Mb/s, please look back on the previous pages where I have posted. I tried 50Mb/s, but it didn't seem to get me anywhere. I still have the same cabling and stuff and it is fine and I am getting a flawless 10Mb/s connection. I really think it is the hubs that could be creating some sort of drain on power within areas. Power levels are significantly low since having the original setup.

This is really confusing, but I managed to get my head around it even though I am a technician myself and I have a qualification for it.

Is there any ethernet cables that give a faster speed than others? I have a cable upstairs and the box is downstairs. I sometimes get buffering, when the computer that is on the same floor very rarely gets any buffering. Wondered if the cable makes any speed differences?

Depending on the build and length of the cable will show a better or worse result. If the cable is squashed or kinked it could cause some loss in packets/speed. Also how long is the cable you're using, and what type Ethernet adapters are they (Gb/s or Mb/s)? Do you use both computers at the same time or one after the other? Have you taken speedtests and pingtests from both individual computers? Like I said before - if the cabling is fine then it is most likely a cause to do with your computer. Have you tried wireless if you have the ability to? If so has it given you a greater result and affect? What broadband package are you on?

Advanced & Mostly unlikely: A cable can be damaged from new if it isn't made correctly and you may actually be using a damaged cable to connect the 2nd computer you stated. Also the port you're using to connect the PC to the Router/Internet Gateway may be faulty. Although it is highly unlikely that could be the case. Have you tried using a different port on your router?

If you've tried everything, try resetting the router and/or purchasing a new cable/looking into other networking options.

I am very sure it will be the one of the 1st above questions and points that are your problem(s). It seems like it may be the computer.

Edit: If this is too much then try using the 1st computer on the 2nd internet connection spot on the same floor. If this does the trick then it could be the Ethernet port on your 2nd computer. A update could fix this sort of problem if there is any updates for the driver that is powering the Ethernet card for use.

SH modem mode with TPLINK TL-WR1042ND

Recently got the above router:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=nw-060-tp

on first install sh in modem mode i was getting about 8mb where as with the sh in router mode id get the full 12.5mb dl so obv the router was causing some issues:mad:

ive now flashed the tp link router with the dd wrt firmware http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index and now getting full speed and also wifi on iphone 4s i was getting 1mb max. now with the dd wrt fw im getting 30mb on wifi and 5 mb upload so router is really improved a lot for me and def worth the £45 investment as the sh is so bad:mad:

also as ya can see in the graph, when i orig installed in modem mode thats the first bit of graph, goes red while doing flashing to dd wrt fw and anything after has been on modem mode and tp link router working fantastic.

My Broadband Ping

its a live graph so will update in the day for others to see, i can honestly say i know it doesnt look clear at the mo but the graph is a lot better, less yellow jitter and hopefully it stays like that!

I normally get 80mbps+ at any point of the day. Oddly enough im ranging between 40mbps and 60mbps tonight but i tried a usenet download and it never dropped below 11MBps

How bizarre??

Very odd mate! I'll check my usenet speeds tonight then and see how I get on. Hopefully more accurate results.

120mbps was meant to rollout this summer. It might be pushed back until the hardware upgrade is complete or it could come at the end of the year
about 4 weeks ago the upgrade boost changed in my VM account, now it's saying
Exciting news - we're giving you a free broadband boost to up to 120Mb, the UK's fastest ever widely available broadband!

Some people may need a new modem to make the most of up to 120Mb broadband. If that includes you, we'll send you a free Virgin Media Super Hub that can handle speeds of up to 120Mb and more.

Check when your area's going to be upgraded.

Just click 'Check now' to find out if you need a new modem.

when i check when it's be upgraded it sweethearts
We estimate your area will be ready between: November 2012 and January 2013

Well after 3 SH's being installed today by 3 separate engineers I am still left with this:

Apparently its a problem all over the South, any one else got it?

Edit: Anyone see any issues with this also?

Apparently my connection is fine, although the woman didn't understand packet loss and/or ping. Any suggestions?
