British workers 'among worst idlers', suggest Tory MPs

Don't confuse being in the workplace for a long time with working hard. we do have a productivity problem in many industries and especially in the public sector, due to a combination of employer and employee related issues. poor work ethics, pointless paid activities and excessive red tape and costs all contribute, but too many people have a vested interest in continuing the status quo until it fails completely...

I partly agree with the statement, but with the small change:-

Some British workers are "among the worst idlers in the world", a group of Conservative MPs have claimed.

I have worked with lots of people, whom if you give them a task which takes roughly up to an hour to complete, you will find most days they take an hour. On rare occasions when it differs, then it does take longer. There are sadly lots of people out there that dont see it as a benefit to them or their company that if a task is even slightly simpler or shorter one day, to then finish it within a shorter timeframe, as it means they would then end up doing more work.

The UK "rewards laziness"

Again I agree to this - in certain situations... I have worked with people that as above, will do the bare minimum and thats it, yet because they mix with the right people, maybe even good at spinning a story or simply because a position needs filled, they manage to progress through the ranks.

I realise everyone should be entitled to a level playing field in an interview, especially when you have external against internal applicants, but the very least you should do with internal applicants, is have a certain level of criteria for their work ethic.

I have even known people whom have been 'staying late' because they have out of work activities after work, where it makes no sense to get the bus home, they just wait it out at work, and go direct. Fair enough, but if they take longer to complete their daily quota so they look busy, and complete no additional tasks, then in no way should this be marked down as 'regulary working late'.

Na we are pretty good since we were bumped up to 28 days.
America on the hand is an utter failure.

Seems you are right. We have the least amount of public holidays in the world second only to Mexico, however we get a lot of statutory holiday.

Not as large as the sense of superiority of someone with a BA in economics & politics.

Wow, you really went out of your way to insult my education, the shame. Kudos. Side note: I am not an economist, I don't have the maths skills for it so I'm not sure where you're inferring some kind of superiority complex from.

Branding all lawyers as crooks and economists as idiots is puerile. My original point still stands.

So are the Greeks... long work hours are a meaningless measure without productivity comparisons.

That's not my point.

If you make people work 60 hour weeks there are going to be times where the workers can not be bothered to work. However if they worked less and had more holidays, more time off, less hours, more time outside of work. Surely some (not all) workers are more likely to be more productive at work. It seems that when you start work full time, you live to work.

How much better do you feel at work after having a week off?

I went out of my way to be insulting just as you were attempting to be with your chip on shoulder comment. If you hadn't been trying to be insulting, you could have worded yourself better. But you didn't. You came across as an arse. So I simply returned the serve. Now the ball is in your court and you can come up with some witty and well worded retort to thwock back with some degree of satisfied smugness and the game will continue.

My comment on lawyers and economists still stands.

Quite ironic really when you consider recently a nurse recorded and blogged the last regrets from dying patients in a hospice and found that nearly all males top regrets was working too hard, I wonder how many people on here will have the same regret on their death bed.

You made a glib comment, I made one back. If you had any factual basis to your original comment then maybe it would be worthy of a discussion. The fact that you think the original comment has even an iota of factual basis is more telling than the comment itself.

If you'd care to discuss what makes lawyers dishonest or why economists are idiots, I'd be happy to engage.

Sad isn't it.
