PSU or my Crossfire cards making the noise?

Hi all,

My computer seems rather noisy at idle, it's been like this for a long time but I'd like to make it a bit more quiet. It's a cheap case so I know that's one thing.

I unplugged my 2x 6770's and turned on the onboard graphics, computer comes on and runs pretty much silent.

When I plug my cards back in and turn it on, the fans on the cards start up fast but then quickly settle down but the computer then seems to be running a lot more noisy. I've turned the fans down to 20% and this makes no difference.

Could it be the PSU struggling with these cards? Or is any PSU going to make more noise once they are plugged in due to the extra load? It's a CIT 750w

I turned CPU fan, front and back fans to full and all pretty much silent when the cards were out so its not them making the noise.

Cheers.

I would have thought a 750 would more than handle a pair of 6770's.
Have you tried each card single to determine if you have a slightly dodgy fan on one of them?

Yeah I've tried them both on their own and swapped them around just to see if it made any difference and it's still the same, just generally get a lot more noise when a card or both cards are plugged in at idle, which is why I'm wondering can PSU be to blame?

I suppose I could see if I could take PSU out and see if it's possible to work out if it is that making the additional noise, but it's not like I'll be able to get it that far away from the computer is it.

Being a CIT PSU, that is the problem.

CIT are not a reliable manufacturer of PSU's, that s why the units are so cheap. It may be the case that it will never be able to output 750W, or anywhere near that.

The problem sounds like the PSU struggling. i would get a new one as soon as you can.

I would say that is the culprit. I would also say the majority of others on here (including myself) will think that is a cheap & nasty PSU, it's probably close to its full load with your spec PC (I would take its power rating with a pinch of salt TBH) PSU's of that 'quality' tend to take the rest of the PC with it when it goes wrong.

I'd replace it with a good quality PSU, something like this.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750M High Performance 750W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020003-UK) £94.99
Total : £105.49 (includes shipping : £8.75).

Ah well, looks like a new PSU it Is.

Do I really need a 750w or could I get away with anything smaller? All I want is a decent, good quality one but nearly £100 is a bit much for me at the minute.

I'm guessing that Corsair will be a a very quiet PSU then?
