Hyundai Coupe 2.7 V6

Touche, but not when next to a Hyundai coupe :P

Especially when next to a Hyundai Coupe. The prelude looks like it was designed with geometry instruments, and the Hyundai looks have been almost universally praised by the motoring press.

But then looks are subjective anyway.

The cougar isn't actually a bad looking car come to think of it. You'll get a v6 and I assume autos exist too. They also cost about 30p to buy and are just a mondeo so easy to fix.

Astra coupe could be another alternative in the same mould - again they're alright really, just an ashtray so easy to sort have decent seats too

The prelude would be the best all rounder imo

2.0 Turbo Coupe is pretty good as well, not a great lover of the chassis mind, always found the steering a little vague, mind you then so is my CLK's.

Talking of which a CLK 230-320 is on budget :D

Yeah I was looking at CLK's but I am concerned what sort of example I am likely to get with a 2-3k budget.

My mentally says I would prefer to get a very good example of a fairly good car, rather than a fair example of a very good car.

Unless you're very clued in mechanically then I would say that's the correct stance to take.

Merc parts tend to be an absolute fortune too

That's my take you are correct.

Back in the early 90's I was a mechanic for a family business but things have changed and I haven't. I work as a teacher now, not mechanical.

I am probably really out of touch but a 2.7 V6 producing a peak 165 BHP from my schooling is likely to be far more reliable than a 1.8-2.0 producing 165bhp+ peak.

The Torque levels seem to be ignored, driving a diesel with 150+bhp sounds great but you tend to find the power comes all at once between a rev range of 3000-4000 RPM.

I am not looking to race the car, but would ideally like to have a nice pull and smoothness or a V6/6 cylinder rather the screaming 4 cylinders.

The Coupe body is a personal choice as I am sick of me being able to take passenger comfortably. Plus I would like a coupe as I have regretted getting rid of my Alfa GTV6 since the day I did it.

It doesn't necessarily work like that in any case, but in this specific case the 2.7 is a dreadful engine.
You really would not gain anything from buying this car over a 2.0 car.

On top of this the hyundai coupe is a dreary uninspiring drive with any engine in it.

I have driven both but the V6 did feel a better beast to me. The 2.0 was straining everywhere. Saying that it doesn't have to be a Hyundai coupe.

You could say I am a bit lost, I guess I am attracted to getting an 04-06 coupe for 2k.

Maybe I should spend more but I am not sure why. I will not be dragging it, drifting it or dyno it so just struggling to find something in my price bracket.

Another factor was servicing, a full cam belt change from the stealer is only £280+VAT. All these things have been going through my mind.

£2k not so good, £3k will get a great example, mine was at the bottom end, but is rapidly approaching the better end.

You should be looking at low mileage facelift models for £3k, 320 engines are nigh on bullet proof, as is the auto box, but watch out for the radiators, valeo ones can lunch the transmission by mixing coolant with transmission fluid on the 2000-2001 models, thankfully many have now been swapped for Behr models.

That is the kind of one I would be looking at, but have a good check for rust. Many you see in good nick nowadays have been treated and resprayed with a better quality paint. Mine has had a respray but wasn't a great job, so I will be getting a couple of panels redone and the rest of the car paint corrected.

Now this I like as I feel I am getting a sensible alternative. Thanks very much for your help.

I am not an old git but I am 38 and very soon 39. The high revving turbo/non-turbo lumps etc are not as appealing to me now. However I appreciate all your informative and helpful feedback.

I am :) well 47 anyway, and it is so relaxing to drive with the best cruise control system I have ever used. The elegance is a bit wafty for some, if you want some thing a bit sportier, get the Avantgarde.

Thank you I am now searching Autotrader. Not being funny but can you see where I am coming from, me in a -2.0l turbo revving at the lights. Not good lol. But I have 20+years driving experience and would like something that looks to the untrained eye as well as goes well when you want it.

I can exactly see that, my previous car was an Impreza, and whilst I loved its performance and handling, every day driving on our poorly maintained country lanes was a kidney destroying hell :)

I have done 2 160 mile round trips recently and have another 200 mile round trip this week. The previous 2 I arrived refreshed and relaxed, having done the same journey in my Impreza I was tense and still had a ringing sound in my ears from the exhaust. The V6 soundtrack is nice enough to make you feel good, but discrete enough not to make you feel like you have an incoming section 59 order. The controls are quite chunky, in the same way the controls in older Jags and Rollers are chunky, but they feel solid and tactile rather than clicky and cheap. The final factor is the performance, sure it is no B road stormer, but it is fast enough to overtake plodders quickly and safely, with a good and relaxed surge away when you need to get moving. Start flicking the gear stick manually, and it feels quite rewarding to drive briskly, but I wouldn't want to push it hard, as at the end of the day, it is a big car.

Manoeuvring is easy as the car has an excellent turning circle like most other RWD vehicles, to the point I find it easier to parallel park and get into my garage than the smaller Subaru, and the parking sensors are handy in this respect also. I cannot think of another coupe which has the same presence and is as relaxing to drive for £2.5k.

I used to own a 2.0l gen3 coupe.

Had the steering rack go which was a bit strange but was fixed under warranty but that was the only thing that went wrong with it.

Loved the driving position and thought it handled quite well for the size of it.
Only thing it missed was power and going on 'book' figures to 2.7 doesn't seem to be much faster.

The amount they modify them on the american forums shows the potential but then I guess any car will when your chucking money at it.

In the end I sold it for an Astra VXR to give me a power fix but don't regret owning it.
