I don't think it's as straight forward as that. I mentioned in the spoiler thread, had Carroll or most other strikers received the ball in the positions Suarez did yesterday, the chances he missed wouldn't have even been created. He creates these chances for himself.
I think that might be the optimistic view tbh. Suarez is a technically outstanding player, but he doesn't appear to be a great finisher, regardless of whether he created the chance or someone else did.

Hopefully for Liverpool he can start to convert as much as his ability would suggest he should be doing, otherwise he'll spend his career being outscored by players not even close to his level, the likes of Bent etc.

so what would you change?

Improve other areas of the side. The focus is on Suarez because we're overly reliant on him (and Gerrard) to score or create something. We need to be getting more goals from the 2 wider players of the front 3. Hopefully Borini can provide that but there's still room for improvement.

We've been linked with Walcott and Dempsey - I'm not a big fan of either but they both get more than their fair share of goals.

It's not an optimistic view, it's the opposite if anything. Our problem isn't simply not having a goalscorer to finish off chances. The team isn't creating enough chances - Suarez is creating them on himself. As above, we rely on him and Gerrard too much.

edit: We need to keep Suarez in the area of the pitch where he can do the most damage but get players in and around him to finish off his good work.

lol sodding hell.

anyway I'd take cheap left back cover. Gives us the chance to see if a) Evra can recover some form or we need to go out and sign a top lb next summer and b) if Fabio has much chance of making it in the pl or we need to plan for the future.

Dutch press are reporting that Manchester United have agreed a fee for Alexander Büttner of Vitesse. Medical tomorrow.

He's a left back.

Edit: He almost signed for Southampton at the start of July but it fell through due to a 'demand from a mystery third party.' Odd.

Wouldnt surprise me if he's just a De Leat type signing

Well, he's on the verge of being called up to the national team (apparently) and he's also 23, so maybe we will use him as cover for Evra. A lot of Dutch football folk seem to rate him quite highly.

Sahin's Loan fee is 2m and his option transfer fee is supposed to be 6m. That seem's very cheap for a player of his quality.

As he's played with Kagawa before I'm totally baffled as to why we aren't in for him.

"I know how to make them feel there is nothing going for them when they play against me…. And as a former winger, I love moving up and engaging in the attack. I had several wingers talking to me on the pitch… “Are you going forward again??”. Most wingers hate running after a full back. I gain confidence every week… I played against the best wingers in the Eredivisie and none of them played me off the pitch. On the contrary, I owned them all….”

Certainly a confident lad. :D

Vitesse Arnhem's Alexander Buttner has revealed that he is set to seal a 'dream' move to Manchester United.

Southampton, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers have all made bids for the 23-year-old - but now it appears he is on his way to Old Trafford in a shock move.

Left-back Buttner, who was included in Holland's preliminary squad for Euro 2012, now appears to be closing on a move to England with the deal reportedly worth €5million (£3.9million).

Speaking to regional tv station Omroep Gelderland Buttner admitted he was about to seal his 'dream' move.

"This is really a dream come true," he said.

"It was all arranged very quickly and of course I am very delighted. Happily everything is coming to an end."

Buttner has been in dispute with Vitesse over his attempts to seal a move away from the club, and had even taken his case to the KNVB (Dutch FA) - but now he looks to have got his wish of a move away from the Gelredome.

United had long been linked with a new left-back with Everton's Leighton Baines believed to be Sir Alex Ferguson's top target - but now it seems Buttner is the man he wants to provide competition for Patrice Evra.

Looking forward to seeing him play. I hope he's one of these 'Newcastle-esque' inspired signings. Unknown, but quality.

I think it's the right move going for someone like this. Pay too much, or buy a well known player and it would leave Evra in a very difficult situation, this guy is young enough and cheap enough that he should be ok with supporting Evra for a year or two before hopefully taking over if he's good enough.

It is optimistic though. You responded to the suggestion that he's a scorer of great goals rather than a great goal scorer (which is something that anyone with eyes has started to wonder at this point). Maybe he will become prolific sooner or later, a better team around him would certainly help him, but using the fact the he created the chance as justification for him missing it doesn't make much sense. A missed chance is a missed chance, are we really supposed to assess his ability to finish only on occasions where he didn't set him self up with a nice turn or something?

Yeah it's possible he'll start to score regular, but from what we've seen over the past 18 months I'd say that is the more optimistic view. Whether it's a chance he created, or someone else created, as of right now his finishing ability doesn't come close to the rest of his game. I don't think that's an unfair thing to say at all.

Put him in a title challenging team and it might not matter that he's missing sitters almost every week, still won't make him a great finisher though.

Anyone see Owen on Goals on Sunday this morning, lets just say he's still certainly not lacking in self belief :p
