Japanese activists

yes i agree that they can obviously commemorate the japanese who died in ww2, but not on a island that does not belong to them..

the island is obviously china's..

if you cant see whats wrong with that, their really is something clearly wrong with you..

I commented on the commemoration of those who died in the war as that seemed to be the issue you particularly disagreed with as you highlighted it.

If you read the details of the dispute linked in the article you quoted it would seem to me that Japan have the better claim to the islands.

There clearly is something wrong with me as this is GD and I read the article and the linked background information before posting, something you seem to have failed to do.

It's going to be interesting because you have China claiming ownership of these islands over US backed Japan. But then you also have US backed South Korea claiming ownership of Liancourt Rocks over US backed Japan.

Throw in oil and gas reserves in both those locations and it's a very awkward Mexican stand off.

yeah you see the key to this is to treat the article like a porno, you read the headline then a few random lines then the last line.

I was carefully alluding to the constant data stealing, not literally. :p

you should be talking literally, the us government found that a load of it's computer components manufactured in china had extra hardware added into them to act as a back door for the Chinese :p

ok

1) please tell me how the island is obviously china's?

2) who do the Falklands "obviously" belong to?

from what ive read the island has changed hands a few times, during ww2 america took it over and after their war they gave it to japan, i dont really understand if china was asked.. i dont really understand much about that part of history..

but to me japan are trying to rub salt in a chinese wound..

This all strikes me as sabre-rattling purely for the purpose of sabre-rattling. Political posturing at it's finest. As I understand it - the islands are tiny and uninhabited? Are they even large enough to construct a military base of any kind?

I don't think that these Japanese "activists" are helping anyone's cause by staging their "protest" in this manner.

the Japanese had had the island for nearly a hundred years before the outbreak of ww2 :/

if you think china has a claim to these islands then i'm guessing you fully support Argentina owning the Falklands and not us?

ahh but you're forgetting one thing, these islands uninhabited and not really cared for by either side have recently been found to be near large gas/oil deposits, and along with the islands comes the rights to those fields.

so now of course both sides have a huge interest in the islands.

China and Japan have been arguing tooth and nail over these islands since a 60s report indicated there were large oil reserves. China is the second largest energy consumer after the US. Japan is the fourth. If there are reserves, it's in both parties best interests to have them. Particularly Japan since everyone **** the bed after Fukushima and they shut down most of their reactors.

i dont know enough about how we come to claim the falklands to make a comment.. did we even ask the Argentinians if it was theirs before taking the island ? or did we take it like we did the rest of the british empire ? if so, then no i dont agree, but i do agree with our war with germany no matter what people say, just look at what germany did, then you'll understand why we did the things we did.

it seems from what ive read that china had ruled the islands for a longer period than japan ever had..

i can totally see china's point of view, why they would be so upset, over turning japanese cars, i dont believe the people of both countrys, the protesters are even thinking about oil, they both have a deep hatred of each other, and im on the people of china's side, because i get that the japanese killing 20 million chinese in ww2 is going to **** them off

Ah. Oil reserves. Now it all makes a lot more sense...

So it's in the same vein as the renewed Argentine hostility over the Falklands, which happened to take place shortly after the discovery of large oil reserves.

Pretty much. And it's why Japan and South Korea are arguing over Liancourt Rocks. Gas reserves. They've been arguing since the end of WW2. But gas reserves and energy demands mean it's been kicking off more and more. Also, North Korea supports South Koreas claim to the islands.

It's more sinister that saber rattling IMO. Those Chinese protestors smashing up Japanese shops are obviously government sanctioned or even paid agitators.

Now might be the best time for China to grab them, during the US election. I mean who the hell is going to vote for a guy wanting to invade China? The can grab Taiwan while their at it. I remember a while ago the US basically hinted they would let them hang out to dry in return for China to keep buying their T bills.

Then Japan better get ready cos North Korea is crazy Korea!

Wouldn't read too much into it. While they gave Japan abuse, they also stuck the boot into the South Korea officials, calling them spineless and unwilling to do anything about Japan.

China's claim to the islands is in some ways even weaker than Argentina's claim to the Falkland islands. At least Spain once had some people living on one of the Falkland islands, if only briefly, and Argentina is the nearest country (though not at all near - the Falkland islands are a fair way out to sea).

On what basis are the islands "obviously" China's?

Not geographically (they're about halfway between China and Japan).

Not by treaty (they're Japanese by treaty).

Not by habitation - the islands are uninhabited.

Not by past habitation - the islands were uninhabited when Japan claimed them in 1895.

Not by prior claim - the Japanese claim went uncontested until gas deposits were discovered nearby, more than 70 years after Japan claimed the island (without knowledge of the gas deposits, obviously).

Japan, China and Taiwan have claims, but China's certainly isn't obviously the strongest. The Japanese claim looks strongest to me.
