90's internet vs modern internet

The only bad thing with IRC, with tons of people, depending on what network you're on and who you chat with, sometimes not even that... some decide to just target your IP. Because you're from a certain country.

At least with Quakenet once you auth and set mode +x you can hide your IP from people.

Twitter only when their is some breaking news going on. That's the only time it's useful - to get info before the news channels. Otherwise it's a complete waste of time.

Like Tony Scott.

These days it feels like everyone's huddled around huge social networking sites, and message boards like these are becoming less active/important.

TV is going the same route. TV is becoming like social media TV. Watch Sky News. Oh my god! If it's on the internet it's on Sky News. Sky News no longer feels like a news channel anymore. Especially at 11:30pm. Trivia central. Any crud thats going.

Sarah-Jane Mee is hard to resist watching it though.

You know how sometimes you just get away from the internet, now it's getting aired on TV. Same with the radio. One time nothing from the internet would have made it on the TV or radio. Share, share, share.

Old internet was rubbish, in the same way that you go back and play old retro games and realise that once the novelty value wears off, that they are often a bit rubbish too.

Don't be so sure. There are plenty of people still playing Dungeon Keeper II, myself included. It's an insanely good game, even today.

I prefer todays browsers. Hard to remember what the content was like in the 90's wouldn't have been that much different to now. I remember friends reunited was the place to be back in the day, one of the first big social networking sites. 5 mins to download 1Mb. More of a novelty back then, but overall much prefer it today.

Ah yes, webcrawler was the best search engine. Pr0n sites that dialled out to some foreign country number and got me in trouble. AOL chat rooms were so exciting as a youth. No, I prefer it now. At least I can access the content I want quickly, and pop-up blockers exist.

I used to frequent a social site called bolt.com, not sure what happened but I recall it being much like Facebook. AOL tech chat was my domain for some geeky reason too.

I guess everything online is more polished today, as it should be, I remember buying from Amazon.com and how exciting it was to be able to import DVD that was out before even the movie was released here in cinemas and Amazon.co.uk didn't exist back then. How Netscape was the best browser and even I used IRC!

It is amazing how Facebook, YouTube and Google has totally changed the landscape online. Don't see many home made basic webpages on Geocities anymore. I can't imagine doing without say iPlayer for example, the ability to stream live TV anywhere, even on my phone whilst on a moving train. I certainly don't miss the 56k dial, that was painful.

Haha, angelfire and altavista - brought back memories. It was fun then because it was completely new and exciting. I remember being excited going into an irc channel and having the ability to talk real time to people all round the world.

These days the Internet is everywhere and the norm for a lot of kids/young adults.

The "old Internet" was much more geeky and you had to do more yourself to reap the rewards. Super fast Internet at secondary school in the late 90's was amazing.

It has become more accessible but that has also meant greater security, easier to use and a content explosion. I mean, what can't you get on the web these days?

A lot of people moan about how much better even OcUK used to be. For me it's been a fantastic Internet constant over the last 12 years.

I don't miss all the pop ups you used to get on every site you went on, especially the ones that pop up then disappear off the screen what's the point in that lol

hate new internet for region locks (thought the whole point of the internet was to bring the world together), shopping sites that want you to fill in a survey about your experience of their site as soon as you go on it for the first time...

Oh, the current internet is a much more useful, 'better' experience. It's actually a practical aid for ones' everyday life, despite the proliferation of closed standard technologies like Facebook\Twitter.

'90s internet was much more esoteric and to me, far more interesting than it is now.

Awful speeds, little useful content, massive phone bills, troubleshooting would take days in many instances, no proper spam filters ... I love the 21st century.

I still have my 90s Btinternet email.

I can confirm that it currently has over 2000 "mail" and 500 "spam".

I can safely say that frankly, today is FAR better.

I used to enjoy MS Comic Chat.

But I like not having to ever delete any emails from Gmail, 118,760 and counting.
