Are there such things as Vanilla TF2 servers?

It was an interview with Gabe (or maybe someone else seinor) when they first anounced the first Medic update. They asked if players would be able to buy the new weapons rather than have to unlock them and they said there was no plans to ever move to a microtransaction model and that they were fully committed to continued free updates.

I'll see if I can find it, but it its going back a number of years...

No plans. Plans change, however, and they have remained committed to continued free updates, so I don't see a problem.

Personally, I love where TF2 is right now. I still use some stock weapons on my characters, but I use lots of the unlocked weapons as well. I use the Your Eternal Reward dagger for my spy, along with the Cloak and Dagger watch. This gives me a massively different playstyle, making it far easier to take out sentry nests, while making it hard to initially start off due to the lack of disguise kit. There are pretty much no 'upgrade' weapons, only sidegrades that are situational. Sure, some people don't like change, but looking at the gameplay stats, and the fact that by your own admission all the servers that offered that are closing because nobody plays on them, it is clear that the game is still incredibly popular and the majority of the community supports the direction the game is taking.

Oh of course, some of the stuff is epic. The spy watch that allowed you to stay hidden while stationary allowed me to play spy whereas before I would strugle as I could never mash keys fast enough to swap disguises, lol.

But with the standard weapons I k.ew what everyone was capable of. I knew a medic would heal me and if I was a heavy or a soldier I could be ubered and we would rush in. If I was a scout it was scatteru gun unless I fancied some close quarters beating, or just run away. Look out for red dots, there's a sniper after you. Etc. But now with so many unlocks and so much disparity between 2 players of the same class its completely destroyed the team work of the original game. Before you used some classes to cover off the weaknesses of others, but now not only have those weaknesses changed, you also have no idea what they are unless you a) know what weapons they are carrying and b) know what those weapons do/don't do.

Having hardly played for ages, I find myself completely lost as to who to team up with, so I end up just going off on my own doing my own thing, and that annoys me.

I'm surprised that they can't offer a TF2 classic mode, it's certainly something that a lot of people would like and choice is never a bad thing.

I can't see it fracturing the community either as a lot of those who want the original TF2 no longer play due to their dislike of all the updates.

Then again, if I'm being cynical, a classic mode wouldn't allow for any sales through the Mann Co. store...

I think the problem is that not a lot of people do want it. Everywhere I found that ran a no unlocks server has taken it offline due to nobody playing on it. It seems most people are perfectly happy to collect hats and craft stuff, probubly because they never actually played the original mode.

I imagine moving to free to play brought in a massive load of new players, but the game was weall nto the microtransaction mode by then.

As much as I love TF2, and am gratefully for the years of support and content, I wish they would slow the hell down and balance some of the ridiculous crap. Also, the guy who decided that the demoman needed to be a melee class needs to be fired. Out of a cannon.

Also, you can't 'balance' a weapon by not allowing it to randomly crit. This is not balancing. The Soda Poppa is utterly stupid. Run around; gain free mini-crits!

Does anyone know if its even possible to turn off the unlocks using the standard variables available in the game? Or will it require some sort of plugin or manual hacking?

I'm tempted to experiment and setup a 16 man Classic TF2 server if its easy to setup, as well as maybe an 'every map except Dust' CS:GO server. But I know nothing about server hosting so it will need to be simple to do.

Every map except dust will work fine, as the server host can choose the rotation.

So far i've not heard of anyone managing to ban weapons from TF2.

You could potentially do it on an honor system, have a load of friends on a rotation to do it, then after a while start adding admins of people with x-hours on the server as that means they're committed to not using the unlocks?

Sounds to me like you need to play the game for longer so you can grasp what all the different weapons do. TF2 is my most played game and have played since release and i cant say i find it lacking balance. Like already said most weapons are sidesteps.

I rarely see one class with the same loadout all the time. The Soda poppa for example i really dont see that much. When i play scout (3rd most played class) I use shortstop. The game is as balanced now as it was you just have more options now, plenty of scouts still use the scattergun. I think you need to play on a good comunity server and get to know some of the players. I fancy you would get back into it after a while.

As for the crafting and the store. If you dont like it do what i do and ignore it. I never feel at a disadvantage even though i ignore this part of the game

People keep adding me on steam asking for my "limited edition hats" I don't even want or care for them, yet I want to keep them..

Its like, people go so mad over some pixels in a game...

Know what you mean, I can't play TF2 anymore becuase of all of this.

I don't know about TF2, but Saigns have a ton of servers on CSS that are vanilla and original maps.

The problem with 'Vanilla' is that it refers to stock game files. All the unlocks and things are stock game files. Its a teminology used to eliminate custom server settings that affect things like round times and crit levels, etc.

Its ok in things like CS as the stock game is pretty much the same as its always been.

CSS and CS 1.6 both balanced and fair (unless you are bad) so it would depend on how you define balanced.

Defined as in there is not a MUST USE loadout for any class. In TF2 as it currently stands I know of no must use loadouts

TF2 is one of my most played games, My primeval warrior badge shows that I started playing on the 28th of September 2007, I bet not many of you can beat that, I have a decent collection of hats and pretty much every weapon in the game (the ones I want anyway) and do you know how much I spent in the steam store? £1.50 and that was only this week to try the new mann vs machine mann up mode which I wasn't too keen on so probably won't spend any more on it

The game is considerably more fun that when it first released, I actually got bored of the game not long after release and only started playing it again 2 years ago, It is incredibly well balanced and the people who say otherwise are just looking for ways to make excuses, no weapons are overpowered, you just aren't as familiar with the game than people that have been playing it for 5 years.

Spot on.

I'm not familiar with the new weapons, meaning there is a barrier stopping me from fully enjoying the game. Whereas before I knew very quickly what each class could and couldn't do and played from there.

Oh, and my Primeval Warrior badge is dated 20th September 2007.
