Disabled Pakastani Girl Arrested For Blasphemy

Without wishing to be provocative does anyone know the official line on why we tolerate various different religions which all believe that they are the only true religion?

Actually i read a comment on this on some site (huff post i think) from a Pakistani resident and he said that this blasphemy law applies to all religions and that she will be released soon, the villagers made a complaint and the police have no choice but to act. I know that Christians are generally treated unfairly in Pakistan but remember always to get all sides of the story.

Agreed that the police seem to have done a fairly good job in this case. Doesn't change the fact the rules are ott.

This world would be a better world without Religion.

its as simple as that.

In some ways, but not in others. Think about it. How is religion useful? What other ways are there keeping the stupid and gullible in proverbial chains? 7 billion people suddenly thinking for themselves, free of dogma. I shiver at the thought.

Trying not to be Devils Advocate, but some people think religious people are the 'stupid' people.

Jus' saying.

Not always. If religion gives people hope and a peaceful heart, who are we to blame them? Sure, I concur with the 'stupid' classification but oh well. As long as they don't interfere with my life or force their beliefs onto my life, we can stay friends.

These threads are like a broken record. Same old arguments are repeated over and over again.

OP- Use your brain and stop condemning religion and an entire country for the actions of a few people or propaganda spewed by the BBC.

But that's the problem, these things keep happening. It's not just one country, it's several. The common factor is religion, one religion in particular.

OK Bigot, you're accusing the nearly 2 billion Muslims and the 200 million Pakistanis as being backwards in a sweeping generalisation all because of 1 event. That can work both ways, how about all Catholics are child molesters?

i thought he was referring to the life of brian?

and anyway "This infuriated some local people and a large crowd gathered to demand action against her. The police were initially reluctant to arrest her, but they came under a lot of pressure from a very large crowd, who were threatening to burn down Christian homes."

i would hope that this is only occuring to keep the peace and a proper outcome is found. feel very sorry for the girl though.

Guys it is not Religion at fault here it is the culture and backwards mentality of certain countries, please do not confuse the two. For example arranged marriages where both the groom and bride are not happy to get married is forbidden in Islam.

However in certain countries they do not realise this and still believe in their thousand year old practices and cultures. This is what the media likes to highlight unfortunately and the masses just believe this to be what Islam teaches.

It always makes me cringe when I hear these kinds of stories and people always believe it to be because of "Islam" and "Muslims".

Technically this story is about religion as the charge is blasphemy... :D

It might be about religion but it has nothing to do with Islam. I can tell you now that (going from what is in said article which might not be 100% accurate) if the girl does indeed have downs syndrome and is not aware of her actions nothing should come about it infact she should be helped with her illness and looked after.

As far as people wanting to burn down christian houses this just shows how people in these certain countries really actually understand what Islam is and what it stands for..

We should be striving as "human beings" to be good people, without having to keep large groups of people in line with threats about what "god" will do to them for doing bad things.

What "good" and "bad" actually are when it boils down to it is highly subjective, but almost certainly we can say that the basics of not murdering each other, not stealing from each other, not raping each other etc. should be adhered to by just being a reasonably balanced and decent person.

Religion is just a cop out and shouldn't come into it. In fact I think it hinders our progress as people start to think that they are not accountable for their actions. (edit - I suppose it's actually more about belief than thought...).

Things like flying planes into buildings thinking that there will be 40 virgins waiting for them in heaven are absolute madness and have no place in modern society. Even teaching this sort of nonsense should be criminalised.

Confessing just before death in the hopes of some sort of salvation in the afterlife is also a joke.

But that doesn't change the fact that little disabled girls are persecuated and potentially executed for destroying paper in different cultures all over the world. It's just the media unfairly targetting Muslims and Asians as usual.

Oh wait..

What do you believe those thousand year old practices are based on? If you asked them, do you think they would say that it has nothing to do with their religion?

I wouldn't ever say that all Muslims are like this but I don't think you can completely remove religion from this as even if you believe their interpretation of Islam to be incorrect, it's still their religion that they're following.

Before Islam arrived in Saudi Arabia from my limited knowledge of the Quran (which I am no expert in, sorry :() it is stated that men from those times used to bury their daughters alive as they preferred a son and an heir and disliked having daughters as it was a sign of weakness.

This is just one example of many practices and cultures which were widely practised until Islam completely prohibited it and many other forms of barbaric practices.

Don’t forget these people may well be simple village folk who have not necessarily had the benefit of education or teachings that we have had the privilege of.

Well it does have something to do with Islam as the religion she is accused of blaspheming against is Islam. The "It's cultural" argument is a bit weak too as religion both informs and is informed by culture.

The fact that the girl has downs is pretty immaterial, no one should face death or any other penalty for blasphemy.

As far as people wanting to burn down christian houses this just shows how people in these certain countries really actually understand what Islam is and what it stands for..

what is the Sharia penalty for blasphemy?
