2556x1440 res with gtx480

you'll be fine with everything in existance at max settings with FXAA/AAA just not MSAA because you'll go over the 1500mb too often. If you want MSAA you gotta sli/xfire these days anyway because to run something new that uses over 2gb of vram with MSAAx8 at over 50fps constantly uses like 2 or 3 top end cards. Maxpayne 3 and sleeping dogs are the culprits here.

this post is a little misleading - in terms of VRAM you'll be able to run most games at max settings minus MSAA... but a 480 won't be able to run at near max settings anyway at 2560x1440 so the VRAM concern is secondary

with a single 480 you'll be turning down settings at 1440 regardless of how much VRAM the game uses (in fact I have to turn down some settings running on a single 670 - hence why I run 2)

if you wanted to max out most games you would need more than 1.5gb of VRAM, but then you'd also need 2 of the latest series of GPU's

I agree with Andybird. If I run one single 580, at 1080p on skyrim modded and maxed out I get fps issues in the forest areas. 2 580s runs it smooth.

So no, I really wouldn't recommend 1 480 for a res that high. You can get 1080p 27" monitors, and tbh mate, even though a lot of people **** them off, I run one and haven't got one single complaint.

If I change my monitor I really want a big upgrade. So another 1080p monitor wouldn't really be much better than my dell. Worse if anything as it would be same Res on a bigger screen.

I have a Hazo 27" and one GTX480 doesn't cut it at this res, you want 2 GTX480's minimum...

I had a 6950 before the 670 with the same res. The 6950 did the job fine in all the games I played apart from BF3 which you could get to about 45-50 fps on low.

yes skyrim modded is the only exception. A gtx480 will run everything maxed out at 40fps plus which is playable on a 1440p screen. There wasn't a single game I didn't go down on settings with a 480 at my res and again not a single game with my current single card either.

edit: you must mean 60fps constantly or something. Name a game that uses over 1500mb vram without any AA?

Yes, for me, smooth is 60fps+, I have a 120Hz monitor 3D vision monitor, so the higher the better.

I never owned a 480, but I did own a single 470 that got up to 850Mhz. That struggled to max things out at 1080p and run at constant 40fps+, hence why I said I didn't think a single 480 would do it.

I agree though in the case of disabling MSAA, AA, etc, that would help a lot.
