90's internet vs modern internet

I also remember having a 400mhz Celeron and a 2x CD Writer. Took 45 minutes to burn a music cd, haha.

Aye, hoping you avoided the dreaded "buffer under run" and created a coaster.

Then came the ultimate enhancement, burnproof writers with 8mb of cache- never a dud again!

I miss the no adverts. I remember when Youtube would just play the video without all the blooming spam you currently get.

Connection speeds were awful (at the time though the data we were downloading was smaller so swings and roundabouts).

I certainly miss IRC (which I don't go on as much now) and MSN / AIM / Etc. and I also miss some of the first MMO's out at the time (Asherons Call, etc.). I certainly prefer my internet connection now though. But the constant streams of adverts and spam, even with an ad-blocker running (i.e. embedded youtube videos) does ruin the experience.

I miss Demon ISP, Freeserve ISP, my old Hayes External Serial Modem (still selling them in the Brazilian jungle for £46:eek:, am I safe? Miss the noise and trying to cover up the racket late at night while certain people were in bed trying to sleep.

I'm not sure about PCI modems, but my external 56k had a headphone jack. If I stuck a pair of headphones in it and dialled out, the noise wouldn't wake people up because it was only sounding through the headphones.

Ubersonic slaps Sharingan_sasuk around a bit with a large trout

I remember that! It was from ICQ or IRC I think, and it would play a WAV file from Elvis saying "uh uh uh, thank you very much" when you got slapped by the trout.

For me, my 1st experience of the internet was 1999 in uni halls on a T1 connection. Therefore I was in a shock when I went home for the summer, now a hardened internet addict, to find that 56k is only a fraction of the speed. When broadband became popular in 2002/3, I was still a bit disappointed that it was 512kbit for an average ISP at the time, where a T1 is 1.5mbit. Thankfully my NTL connection went from 600kbit, to 720kbit then hit the magic 1.5mbit around 2005 to satisfy my 'benchmark'.

You could do it on PCI modems, with either a simple volume slider for the speaker in the modem settings, or by setting an extra command option. I researched this early seen as quite a lot of the time I'd sneak down and use the family computer well into the early hours of the night, before I gave up and took it to my room hah.

It came from IRC, however, my IRC client certainly never made that sound, thankfully haha.

People are nostalgic of the old Internet??
A case of selective amnesia maybe lol
Modern web technology is a true technological achievement and if you're disillusioned with it, you're doing it wrong
