Could do with some help (not actually me but my Dad) on buying a 5 Series Estate for around £8k.
He currently drives an E39 M5 but needs to replace it to accommodate two large dogs.
Ideally he's looking for better MPG but still decent performance. I think he currently gets about 17/18 MPG.
Sorry to sound vague and useless but this is pretty much the only information I know ATM.

Thanks for any help.:)

£8k will be a pre-facelift E60. Fox will be along soon to tell you how much of a bad idea this is.

If he's willing to look around, likes his e39 and is happy enough with a reasonable level of both performance and economy as opposed to v8 awesomeness it might be an idea to just spend a bit less and buy as nice an e39 530i touring as he can find.

I reckon the 535/540i would be too thirsty compared to the performance hit from an M - the 3 litre 6 is a good compromise.

I don't think i'd want an E60 with a decent engine for £8k

I've been looking at pre-LCI E60s, the only thing that really puts me off are people opinions on here. I’ve driven one a couple of years ago and really liked it. I appreciate people’s views on the less than subtle interior lines but other than that thought it was a nice place to be.

I stared a thread last week about the E86 but on reflection I think the size is going to be prohibitive. I don’t really want an E46 and the E9* is out of budget really (as hypocritical as it sounds, I really don’t want a pre LCI E90).

The main thing putting me of is the £85pm warranty and fact that most of the sub £10k pre-LCI’s are over the 60k threshold now. How mental is it running a 258BHP 530i out of warranty?

He needs an E39. A pre LCI E61 will just annoy him. Tell him to buy the nicest E39 Touring he can find - £8k will leave him with change - and keep it until he can afford an F10.

540i Touring if he still wants a V8
530i Touring if he doesn't.

Don't go looking for the best deal, go looking for the best car. Though really it'll be hard to spend more than £5-6k anyway.

If he doesn't care about getting a Sport, then SE's are almost free:

It'll obviously cost a pile of cash to keep going but he's used to that with his M5 anyway, which is why I break my usual silence and wholeheartedly recommend an old BMW :p

540i Touring seems like a perfect fit so hopefully he'll agree. He sold his M5 this afternoon for next to nothing so he'll probably end up getting a car within the next month.

Thankyou for the advice.

100k mileage, 2000 reg, everything was in good condition/very good except the leather on the rear seats which was worn due to the dogs.
Sold it for £3,000.
Can't comment on the spec as I'm not too sure.

No you wouldn't. You swapped a 528i for a 318i for goodness sake :p

And am I glad that I did so!

When your older, with a family and home to pay for you may finally grasp my reasons for doing so.

In actual fact, I probably would not drop £3k on an M5 at the moment but only because my money is,these days, spent on things far more important - to me - than cars.

Hey ho, you don't know me Fox, you just think you do.

I don't think he was asking for that?

That's a mental low price for a working M5. Just the throttle bodies, gearbox and diff could have been broken from the car for not much less than that.
