Which is the better card between the GTX 480 and GTX 560 for gaming at 1920x1200.
Mainly playing CS:GO, Crysis, TF2 etc.
Basically I'd like an nVidia but have a max budget of £150

the 480 should OC to about stock 580 levels and has a little bit more VRAM than a 560ti
but it will also be hotter and draw more power

in terms of pure gaming power the 480 is the faster, more adaptable card

Considering the GTX 560 family:

  • The GTX 480 is as better performing card than the GTX 560 by a long way
  • The GTX 560Ti is closer but the GTX 480 still has the best performance
  • The 560Ti 448 is fairly evenly matched to the GTX 480

Thanks for the comparisons!
How much of an issue is the 480s heat/power?

I have an XFX 550W (528W 12V+) - would this be enough? And would I need to install extra cooling if I were to get the 480?

Yes and no. 480 is miles ahead of the 560 and will OC to around 580 performance - but if you want to push it further you'll need a 3rd party cooler as the overclocks are limited by heat.

The only sensible, large jump IMO is a 670/680. Hanging onto mine until it stops raping games at 1920x1080 which doesn't look likely til at least crysis 3.

There really isn't much difference between the 4 and 5 series from nVidia outside of the power consumption controls. nVidia's 4 to 5 series is the same as AMD's 5-6 series. Not much difference bar a few power saving features.

Dont forget to take into account the fact that the GTX480 is a power crazy, burning hot, jet propelled nightmare of death.

Sincerely, a reference + OC'd 480 owner
