What planet do judges come from?

^^^^ Laffo, concentration camps for illegal immigrants.

If he isn't going to tell the Home Office where he is from and they aren't doing anything else to find out (asking foreign governments, checking travel records, etc) then the deportation will never happen, so he can't lawfully be detained pending deportation.

They don't have to give him a house, but even if they did it would actually be a lot cheaper than keeping him in custody.

Then I can only hope that the illegal immigrant isn't able to hold a bank account and thus can't cash the pay out.

You must admit the law is a total ass, though I don't quite know what the solution would be.

That is just appalling. I see no reason to award anyone with that many offenses any money from the court.

People like that dont deserve human rights.

Who cares? He's come here illegally, committed dozens of crimes... clearly wants to integrate well and become a respectable citizen doesn't he?

Actually I could name many parts of Britain where he'd fit right in. He just needs to add drunken violence to his crimes and he'd be just like many of the locals.

Reading through, he only got the £17k for the last 4 months of his first time.

So, 2 years (make that 1 then the tag) and he is still here as an illegal. State funded in prison, which will cost us approx £47,000 (based on BBC in 2011, so may be higher now). Include his time spent previous, the pay out, 9 years on benefits (approxing £18K per year on that) he has cost us somewhere around £225,000. you would have to earn £25,500 NET per year in tat same time to earn that...........

Is times like this when i wish we took the same stance that Australia does on immigrants.....only come in if you are being of use to the society you are moving into and if you are illegal, then you will be sent back......no passing go, no spending 13 years living on state benefits while you fight your claim to be her and cause gnaws, just gone back.

17k*3 = 51K annually. He is making more money than many people in this country. this is just bad.

Where do we send them back though?

"The judge ruled that the detention had been lawful for most of that period, but had been illegal between January and May 2011 because attempts to establish his nationality had faltered and there had been no realistic prospect of deportation."

Whilst I'm heartily against the £17.5k awarded to this man, his refusal to provide details of his original country is sadly the stock tactic used by anyone entering the country illegally these days.

Jackpot!

You can see why people come to this country.

One often wonders why common sense seldom prevails

If you were locked up for no reason at all for a year would you want compensation? IF you were told since you had a parking ticket that you aren't entitled to anything, tough luck you spent a year in prison, so what.

If you went to Spain on holiday and got locked up illegally for no reason for a year and instead of getting compensation you got nothing because you aren't Spanish?

The difference being he wasn't here on holiday. He was here ILLEGALLY. That in it's self should be warrant enough to lock him up. Yes the investigation faltered into determining his true nationality but only because he refused to be truthful about it. He'll have been detained because of the 'flight risk'

LOLBritishjustice..gotta love it for the stupid sentences that are handed out along with the millions of compo paid out because some poor illegal immigrant feels his human rights were abused.
