I am awful at football, help me Overclockers!

Dont run with the ball just play stop pass. Stop ball pass straight way keep it short and simple. Dont try first touch passing take one touch look then pass. If some1 charging you down in deep in yer half kick into touch take no risks.

Make sure you don't look at your feet the whole time when you receive the ball. Very easy to freeze up and get tackled if you aren't aware of the space around you.

Also, think about what you want to achieve with your first touch and where you plan to go with your 'move'.

This for me is key. Head up in 5 aside gives you that half a second that affords you to pick the right pass without having some lump trying to run through you because you've been too busy watching your feet control it. Get comfortable not looking at them.

Somebody above mentioned kicking a ball at the wall and controlling the ball when it returns, this is what I'd do whenever I was on my own.

I'd start from a distance, pass at the wall with my right, return it back at the wall with my left without controlling, right, left, right , left. increasing speed and reducing distance to the wall as I went.

As you go on try adjusting things like, Where you want to strike, how you want to strike it. simply doing this for a while develop that.

Whilst you might look a bit like a silly sod depending on your age, you really don't require anybody else to practise basic football footwork and ball control.

Just play in the position which matches your strengths. If you are fast, go striker or wings. If you can tackle just play in defense, win the ball and there is usually a free pass available. If you're rubbish at everything try goalkeeper. All else fails, just foul everyone.

Practice.

Make some small goals which will help with your finishing. Make some or buy some cones to help with control and dribbling. Lastly as has been said kick a ball against a wall and learn your first touch.

Stay in the middle of the pitch, jockey the player and DON'T dive in. Just slow the other player down and generally become a git to get past. Even if you can't tackle the other player you're stopping them or slowing them down until someone else comes along.

If you end up with the ball, stop pass and move. Keep it simple.

Tony Pulis

On a serious note, hows your fitness? a fat person is rarely any good at a sport like football, regardless of how hard they try. Similar issue with agility.

I find concentrating on where people are all the time helps give you more time when the ball comes - when it is being passed to you, you can choose which direction to control it to, how much you need to protect it etc, and already have an idea of where you want to pass it to. If you don't know any of that stuff and the ball is coming your way, you now have to start thinking about it whilst also protecting and controlling the ball and you can get caught while hesitating (and head-down syndrome).

Read the rules for your 5 a side league. Rules are always different for keepers I've found, and knowing them makes a huge difference.

Some do and don't make use of pass back rules.
Some do and don't let opposition players in the keepers area.

This can make a huge difference to how you play, and the pressure you are under.

As others have said, keep it REALLY simple. I'm... at best 'ok' on pitch playing at the back. In goal I made use of the fact I could see more than others and kept communication up and just kept it really simple. You dont need to play big sweeping curling passes, just a simple roll on the floor to feet is perfect 90% of the time.

pass against the wall, shoot against the wall, run with the ball/practice turning with the ball and do keepy ups..should see you become a better player. ;)

The only way to get better at football is to be in possession of the ball. It is no good hiding away in the corner of the pitch not wanting to be passed to, or making excuses not to play because you don't think you are very good.

Make yourself available to be passed to, get yourself into space so you are a outlet. When you do get the ball, if you aren't too confident in your own ability, just play it simple, keep possession, even if they means just passing it 5 yards.

As you get more confident you'll naturally find yourself passing further and beating players.

It comes with practice. First of all, be composed and be fully aware of your team mates around you. When I say composed, play nice clean and simple passes, your confidence will rise from this. Keep awareness up, when keeping passing composed, you want to do this at a relatively quick rate especially in 5 a side, as time isn't really kind to you in that sort of space. I try to work out where I am passing next or when I would pass next if I was to receive the ball. This way you can keep the tempo up, but like I said the short amount of space means you'd be challenged within seconds.

I'd practice with a mate from time to time.

start practicing ball control with a golf ball, when you master that work up to a tennis ball, until your ready for a regulation football :D
