Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Phone retensions (cencelations) and cancel. Explain why.

Personally this is what I would do as this is shocking service.
Luckily I've not experienced anything like this.

I know you may get poorer speeds elsewhere but it'll be better than the service you're receiving at present

That is what I feel I should do to be honest, who would my other choices be though as I need cable really as maximum linespeed otherwise is about 2mb.

Edit: cheers Llamadal, I'll give it a go.

Ya haven't got 4g tether yet, ya have a 3G tether but I'd ring then up and cancel with in 28 days, I'm pretty sure you have 28 days from service activation if ya not happy with service and it's no quibble so cancel no questions ask. Is a fttc service not aval in your area? If not then virgin is ya only choice, make sure ya have 28 days from service activation and just use ya 3G for tethering, I've been with virgin 10 months now and I've been happy ish and I've just got my old VGN300 modem activated so il be posting my think broadband graph to see if how it is compared to the superhub. As soon as ya service goes live get a think broadband graph going and then ya can see how busy your area is with contention and jitter. Where I am it seems a relative quiet area luckily, I'm on 100mb and I do get 12.51mb usually, only issue is I'm on 5mb upload for the time being.

Can anyone suggest what I should do in this situation?

I've been a returning virgin customer for less than a week and already I'm wishing I'd gone with another provider.

Installation was started last Wednesday (15/08) after a 3 week waiting period, but the engineers discovered that the cables by our house weren’t connected to the exchange (the manager also said they'd done the house next door and had the exact same problem). He said they couldn't do it that day (though my girlfriend overheard one complaining he'd have to stay late if they did it that day), and said they'd call back the next morning to rearrange installation.

They never did so I called up to find out what was happening in the evening. I was promised another call back when someone had looked into it.

They never did so I called back on Friday, re-explained my problem and the guy booked an engineer visit for the Monday. On Monday, the engineer arrived, and instantly realised that he couldn't do anything as it was an external problem (which I had told the guy on Friday).

He promised to get someone to call back the next morning and sort it out. Once again no one called so I had to call yet again this afternoon to follow it up and finally got somewhere with them actually realising that it was an external fault and they rearranged for installation on the 6th of September. I've been offered money off the installation and next month’s services for free as a result, but personally am not at all happy about having to wait a further 16 days to get it sorted and am just thinking about jacking it all in and continuing to use my mobile phones 4G tether.

I've wasted a ton of time messing about with this and just want to get my services connected.

If I switched to another provided such as BT I'm worried I'd just go through this song and dance all over again.

I just assumed it was 4G as that's what the status bar says when I'm using it (it's a custom one though). At any rate 3G seems to be not bad and has no usage limit.

Could you trust me his email if you still have it please llamadal as I can't find it (linked in wants me to pay to contact him) :/

Would it be a routing problem? However my upload is as solid as a rock around 9.5

Just a note about the TBB graph- there was barely anyone using the net between 6pm yesterday and 6pm today. The peak at the end is me doing speed tests today I'm guessing.

okay, looking at get 100mb now, a little late in the day as our talktalk connection runs out on the 7th :P How long does it usually take to book the virgin engineer to sort out the cable connection?

also, do you think if i ring them asking about this speed doubling thing that if it hasn't been applied to my area yet, that we could buy 60mb and get 100mb for the same price when it is applied?

Not yet mate but it definitely has to be larger issue as mine has gone the same as yours and I'm on a different UBR. Also when I checked your speeds they were fine at around 8PM and your issues started later on.

I do know that they are doing local resegmentation work and I'm hoping that hasn't had any affect on the local network

I'm on Virgin Media 60mb, only get 2.7mb upload at best which means streaming at even 1000kbps can drop frames, anyone know if Virgin will boost this or offer a package with 10mb upload?

All upload speeds are 5% of download speed iirc, it used to be 10%.
