Tho looking at the image of how badly it had deteriorated any restoration work would be fairly close to what it would take to change it back now so in some ways its a bit academic as most of the original has been lost anyway.

That said no excuse for someone taking it on themselves to do work like that on something that doesn't belong to them.

Quoting the Bible directly:

The depiction of Jesus as having long hair only started in the 6th century.

Thats all impressionism is i.e. an excuse for being a rubbish artist and not being able to accurately reproduce the subject material. that's why most impressionist artist were penniless in the day... their work wasnt called impressionism it was juts called rubbish!
