Hi there. I'm having trouble deciding on what to do and was hoping for some guidance from 7950 users or those in the know, who game at 1920x1080/1200/1440. My Windforce x3 670 is on it's way back to OCUK under DSR as I'd rather go with the 7970 for the same price and by today's cuts, even cheaper. Well as I'll be gaming at the resolutions above, would a 7950 suffice?. I'd be overclocking it to it's limit on the cooler it comes with too.

Thing is that I can get the VTX3D HD 7950 X-Edition plus a 2TB hard drive for £314.98 when I'll be getting £323.99 back for my 670. I'd rather just spend the extra on something than getting a refund and will be good to replace my existing drive as it's an old Sata II drive.

I was all set on the 7970 but after reading the article http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18435311 through this thread it's made me think.

Should I go for the 7950 or stick with the 7970?. I'm finding it hard to buy the 7970 now for £70+ extra but if it's worth it for my resolution then I'll just get it. My main game will be BF3 and I'm not playing my computer as much these days.

I was using my 7950 at 1080P with an OC of 950 core so not a massive OC by any shout.
It still performed really well though with as much quality/detail as I wanted with BF3 for example.

I play at 1920x1200 and I decided that a 7970 is just complete overkill tbh.
From an epeen perspective it grants bragging rights I guess, but at those resolutions, save the cash and grab a 7950. The 7950 has good headroom to overclock.

I just ordered a 7950 sapphire OC, the MSI 7950 twin frozr is another good choice.

Seriously forget about 7970.

how does the 7950 stack up against the gtx660ti since they are similary priced? I can't believe there are no user benches on the 660ti yet.

Not used 3D then?

It can fair blooter your fps in certain games, if it's an option, take that into account too.

It can if your using 3D, but OP doesn't mention 3D, or resolutions that require that level of graphical oomph tbh.

Do you really think 3D is at the point of mass appeal in games, still feels gimmicky imho. I just feel 3D since it's inception way back when I were a lad to be pretty weak.

I also find 3D specs 'darken' the screen in any media format and wash out colours.

Also, J.D you using a Viewsonic CRT?

I run my HD7950 @1005/1500 while I can run every game so far maxed at 1080p except BF3 all High settings, it does sometime struggle on B2K maps dropping from 60 into 40's for couple secs only some parts of the maps does this.
If I lower mesh quality down to medium It runs 60fps no matter what.

Max Payne 3 another superb looking game, I played thought the hole game without a single frame drop, 60FPS all the time.

On Bf3 some say it was the last patch messed up performance I dont really think so.

Which ever card you decide on If you do go for a twin frozer version be advised they are seriously loud at anything over 75% fan speed

Not a problem for me as I game with a headset but something to concider

Its more than enough for 1080p JD.

However if you can afford a 7970 (£299) then id get that just to have 'the best'. :D

You know it will hurt when i beat you in the uningine heaven thread. :p

J.D, if you get a good clocking 7950, then there won't be that much in it and it will be comparable to your outgoing 670.

If you want>670, then the 7970 is the one to get.

You have to balance out whether you want that little bit extra or the (almost)best of both worlds with the 7950+HD.

Far from being a puppy myself, I know what 3D brings to gaming using it, takes it to a whole different level and re-invigorated my interest in gaming, the immersion has to be seen to be believed.

It's not for everyone, just threw in my tuppence worth to the op-'if it's an option'.

:)

I find this as well with my 7950, I just think the B2K maps are really badly optimized. Skyrim on my 7950 looks GORGEOUS maxed at 1080p with third party mods.

I just got my Twin Frozr and the fan hasn't gone above 45% keeping the card at a cool 55c. I doubt there are many cards out there that would be very quiet at 75%. Not sure what situation would cause the fan on my card to go to 75%.

Its because the B2K maps, in places, are CPU bottlenecked.

Tommy, did you keep your 7970? How does it clock and has the coil whine gone?
